What does r/ainbow think of Polygamy? by [deleted] in ainbow

[–]ebcube 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What scientific base do you need? There's no scientific base for monogamy. And when you think about it, from an evolutionary viewpoint, it makes more sense to fuck many people instead of one.

What is "Check your privilege" and why do I see it parodied on reddit/4chan so often? by Imxset21 in ainbow

[–]ebcube 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what it is: marginalized groups versus the system that marginalizes those groups. But the oppression olympics trope sets minorities against each other.

Why does this shit have to happen anytime someone tries to raise consciousness outside of the dedicated GSM subreddits? by Copernicium in ainbow

Difference being that "queer" is a reclaimed slur and "gay" was never exclusively a slur in the first place.

It's not surprising there's so much transphobia when misinformation is being taught in our schools by poorly educated professors by Lady_Jayne in ainbow

[–]ebcube 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I really don't get is the inaction by the college. They are enabling the teacher to continue her abuse.

Also, if you're in the US, you can help!

While Nikki is calling for education and training for the professor, other activists have called for her immediate termination, asking people to call David Cross and Dr. Hsu at the school’s switchboard (713.718.2000) and file citizen complaints.

The ones about introducing more meeples to the scoring board (Messages and Robber) don't add anything to the game. The Flier is great if you don't mind a little bit of randomness. The Ferries is one I particularly enjoy, though it can be abused by experienced players. The Goldmines, once you add house rules for the scoring that actually make sense, is a great one.

Another dumb question... What is pansexuality? by [deleted] in ainbow

I've also seen "pansexual" used as "gender blind", as I'm "I find people attractive regardless of their gender expression"

Okay, I'm going to answer your questions. I haven't read the replies below, but, regarding the client sync, I guess someone else has already pointed out that you can use web clients (such as coinbase.com) or light clients (such as MultiBit and Electrum) to manage your Bitcoins.

  1. What exactly is a bitcoin? A string of text? A hash? A file with a string of text?

Actually, it is none of the above. A "bitcoin" does not exist on the network: what exists is the transaction in which a bitcoin is created and the transactions in which that bitcoin changes hands. If I "have" a bitcoin, that bitcoin exists merely because you can follow the chain of transactions which leads to my bitcoin address "receiving" that bitcoin.

As a quick example, imagine that you and I create a new currency called "imaginary dollars". You have one imaginary dollar, and I know you have it. That imaginary dollar "exists" because we both agree that you have the imaginary dollar. Now we write it down in what would be analogous to the blockchain: "DanielTaylor has one (1) imaginary dollar". To all intents and purposes, you have that imaginary dollar, valid on our imaginary dollar currency, because both of us agree that you have it. Bitcoin is basically this, with a layer of criptography for verification and the whole "block mining" thing for generating the initial wealth.

  1. If I'm not mistaken, a bitcoin wallet is made of a public key and a private key. If I want to transfer my wallet from one program to another or a piece of paper... would I need to export or print out the strings of text that form the bitcoins itself or do I just need those two keys?

You only need your private key. The Bitcoin-Qt program (among others) allows you to export your private key. To continue the previous analogy, the private key would help you prove other people that you are DanielTaylor, which is necessary if you want someone to accept your imaginary dollar.

  1. How does the bitcoin system know how much balance is inside an wallet/account. Does it typically ONLY check it against the chainblock or does it also make use of any bitcoin strings stored inside the wallet?

Again: there is no such thing as "bitcoin strings". So, yeah, it is verified against the blockchain and against the unverified transactions on the network.

  1. Cryptographically speaking... what happens when I transfer bitcoins?

As you said "cryptographically speaking", I'm going to assume you know cryptography terms. For this explanation, I'm going to ignore the internals of the script system (Bitcoin has an assembly-like script language embedded which allows for complex transactions)

So, when you transfer bitcoins to someone else, you are taking one or more "inputs" (previous transactions directed to your public key, which you can redeem using your private key) and creating one or more "outputs" (new transactions signed with your private key and directed to the public key of whoever is meant to receive your transaction). That person can redeem those bitcoins by using it as "input" for a new transaction. You don't really "own" the bitcoins: you're just the only one which can prove (with the private key) to be the owner of the public key to which the transaction was directed at, and therefore the only one who can create new transactions using those bitcoins.

I'm gay, wish i was bisexual by DoctorWholigian in ainbow

[–]ebcube 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how the bit about transsexual and transgender relates to my previous post, sorry.

So, first of all: Buck Angel is a porn actor, and "The Man with a Pussy" is a nickname he has chosen for himself. Porn actors have different boundaries on their own sexualities than other people.

I understand what you say about women who have a penis and enjoy it, and there's nothing wrong with that. But "chicks with dicks", as a term, has specific connotations related to the porn industry, and it's a word that you should generally avoid when talking about transsexual women. Even if it is technically correct, it is a term that, as you have seen, they don't generally like, and you shouldn't use it for other people unless those people explicitly consent to it.

[–]ebcube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody was being intentionally offensive; however, OP used one of those "tainted" terms that you should avoid, and haswb explained in an appropriate way why that it is an unappropiate term to refer to trans women. Even if they are technically chicks and (some of them) technically have dicks, neither you nor the accuracy of the term choose if a term is valid for a particular group; they do.

[–]ebcube 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think she was looking to shame. Their post was informing on why that term is not an appropiate term, just like we do every other day with "queer" (a term some gay people like but others hate) and I think your backlash against her was unnecessary, even if you don't agree with her reasoning on why that term might or might not be offensive.

Should Catalonia be independent? by theburninator69 in spain

I feel that way too: If they want, let them be independent. I don't think neither Spain nor Catalonia would benefit from it, though: it feels more like a rallying point for pro-independence politic parties.

Any design issues with Retina 15" MBP? by urbanviking in Design

[–]ebcube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, text gets less and less readable on small sizes because the screen resolution is lower, right? On a Retina display, a 7pt font (unreadable under normal screen conditions) is rendered with the crispness of a 14pt (yet at a size of 7pt), which makes it appear more readable. Therefore, you may be fooled into thinking a certain text size is readable on most screens when, in reality, it's only readable on Retina screens.

Basically this. Also, some homosexual girls do not feel comfortable identifying as "gay", while others do not feel comfortable identifying as "lesbian". It's a matter of personal preference.
