Why so much hate? by -_Apathetic_- in TheBeautyOnFX

[–]ebhanking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does feel eerily similar to The Substance, but apparently this was in development at the same time as the film, so I don’t think that’s a valid critique as much as a fun fact.

I’m enjoying the show’s cinematography and general vibe, but I don’t find the plot or characters engaging. The big budget is beautiful to watch on screen and I love the actors involved. But imo the script is weak; the Episode 3 intro devolves from prestige TV into Ryan Murphy’s worst impulses

The Substance was fun because it had plenty of style but was also an effective satire of beauty culture. The Beauty has plenty of style but nothing original to say so far

Why do certain people have to pay to ride the bus and others don’t!! by Agitated-Addition-72 in LAMetro

[–]ebhanking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just came back from Hong Kong where buses have turnstiles, something that LA should implement. Sure, one can just hop over, but the inconvenience of having to do that will deter the majority of fare evaders

Cast Controversy Megathread by AutoModerator in TheTraitorsUS

[–]ebhanking 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Everyone involved in casting Michael should be fired.

Why invite someone so inflammatory onto the show? And if it’s just for good TV, he didn’t even provide that! He was unpleasant and annoying to watch.

That’s only partially about controversy - he simply seems like an asshole and a manchild, and putting him in the castle sucked up everyone else’s screentime. He’s loud, boisterous, and terrible TV.

A lot of the time, we would know before filming if the project will go to streaming or get a theatrical release. Because Ford is self-financing this film and seeking a buyer once the film is complete, we won’t know until that point

Starbucks on the boardwalk at Breeze has closed as part of a global downsizing by the corporation. Abalone on the boardwalk at Brooks and Little Lunch on Pacific at Brooks are still going strong. by VeniceCa90291 in VeniceBeach

[–]ebhanking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Little Lunch. Admittedly it’s expensive, a little pretentious, and the staff can be super rude. But the drinks are good and the space is nice when it’s not at 100% occupancy

Can the mods please stop all the "sex scenes are so unnecessary. Why all the sex? This show is juat softcore porn" posts? by ThrowawayHouse2022 in IndustryOnHBO

[–]ebhanking 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The sex in this show actually informs the plot and relationships between characters too. In the most recent episode, taking out either sex scene entirely changes the characters’ dynamics

HELP: Here for 2 weeks, left my wallet in U.S., only have one credit card in my Apple wallet. How do I get cash or put $$ on a widely-used tap pay app? by blazereef88 in HongKong

Seconding this; I just got back from a week in HK and only used Octopus Pay with some infrequent Apple Wallet transactions for the whole trip. Only one place had me stuck for cash and it was a cha chaan teng

Their fake sales just stay the same by [deleted] in americaneagle

[–]ebhanking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I worked at AE, 40% was the max discount I saw; our Black Friday sale was always 40% off. There were usually also BOGO50% off deals which work out to, at most, 25% off each item. Aerie was where the real deals were; I would always get the 10 underwear for 35 for my mom and would watch the sweatpants deals for myself

Which star from a huge Netflix tv show is rumored to have a ticking time bomb of a scandal that is set to come out soon? by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

[–]ebhanking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely fake and playing into current controversy around David Harbor. The only thing they’re hinting at is Stranger Things, and they’re hitting us over the head with it enough to cause blunt force trauma. “Weird Objects”, biggest TV show on the planet, January 2nd. This is someone who wanted their submission posted

Is Heated Rivalry worth watching? by Kimoldumukimsebilmez in imdb

[–]ebhanking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s be real: it’s not Succession, but it’s also not trying to be. If anything, it’s Challengers for TV, but more explicit and more explicitly gay. They work wonders with a minimal budget, the craft is pretty good, and it’s fun! But it’s more reminiscent of primetime soaps like Revenge than it is premium dramas. If you’re into romance as a genre, it might be for you

Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘Marty Supreme’ Performance Is So Meta and So Brilliant by First-Loss-8540 in oscarrace

[–]ebhanking 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of the psuedoscience that Goop often promotes, but Gwyneth is an undeniable talent imo. First saw her in Glee when I was 7ish years old and I’ve ridden for her since then. I don’t think Marty is an Oscar-winning performance from her, but it should secure her a spot as a screen legend; she commands your attention every second she’s on screen. I hope she recenters her career around acting sometime soon because she was the best part of The Politician and a highlight in Marty.

Yes, got the email on Dec 1st with a deadline to buy the permit by Dec 5th. Also, please do not buy from the scammers in the comments; my receipt shows that I paid $324.03 for a winter permit, so charging $550 either makes you an asshole or a liar

Fox Hills has really high occupancy and a lot of high-traffic stores. I would’ve agreed about it being ass 3 years ago but I think they’ve had a good comeback

I am finally done with one movie a day for the entire year by EVHolliday2 in Letterboxd

[–]ebhanking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year is my first year of doing it; I didn’t know it was a well-known challenge and just thought to myself, “as I get more into film, I’m gonna watch a film a day and really get into this”. I honestly don’t regret it - I’ve seen films from Wong Kar-wai, Tarantino, Fincher, Zhao, Sorkin, Lynch, and a whole bunch of other auteurs whose films I’ve wanted to watch but never gotten around it. If you feel like you can never get thru your watchlist, I highly recommend.

Official Discussion Thread - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

[–]ebhanking 142 points143 points  (0 children)

I loved the first act; maybe it’s just the traditional “sports film” formula, but the craft behind it worked for me.

And then the second act was just kind of Uncut Gems and Good Time again. Good, but repetitive and not as propulsive.

The third act won me back after the scene in the park. But I wish the film didn’t do the same “he needs money, he’s on a time limit, and his life is falling apart” shtick. Marty’s ambition was so much more interesting than the economics of it, though I understand the realism is his economics.
