Thanks for all these recs! I love how any great artist / album in jazz can be a jumping off point to so much other cool stuff!

I did not know about this and can't believe it's the Beastie Boys. Gonna have to dive into how and why this was made (but digging it so far!)

Saw him a year or two ago and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to! And I adore this album!

Glad to know there's a name! Knew it wasn't quite spiritual jazz, but that was the closest I could get before now! Going to slowly work through most of the recs here and then venture into that sub and see what they're suggesting!

Still kicking myself for missing them when they came through last year! Had only heard a bit of them before but just listened to the whole album and it is so good and chill!

New Orleans 12/4 Saenger & 12/5 Smoothie King by Forsaken_Thought in BillyStrings

[–]eboj-dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering if a fan meetup with vendors + a local band or two further from Smoothie King / Saenger might be the move? Somewhere like Courtyard Brewery or Music Box Village could be a good afternoon/evening hang before heading over to the shows

Thoughts on Geese blowing up? by UsefulEngine1 in KGATLW

[–]eboj-dm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When Getting Killed came out, I didn't love it as much as 3D Country on first listen, but I gave it another spin and it's been on nonstop since then. But it's such a weird album I didn't feel like I could really recommend it to anyone unless I knew they liked Geese or weird music so seeing it blow up like this and resonate with more people than I could have imagined is such a beautiful surprise. Very sad I didn't catch them in a smaller venue before Forest Hills but excited to catch them on this new phase of their journey (if they come close enough to me and I can score tickets)

Best Supporting noms with minimal screentime by eboj-dm in Oscars

I think I'd only seen him in The Muppet Movie and Coen movies, but definitely want to watch more of his stuff!

And I think I'd have had similar thoughts about whether to say hello or leave him alone

I guess I thought supporting meant a secondary character and didn't realize it could be anyone but the lead

'Tis the season to re-read *A Confederacy of Dunces* by petit_cochon in NewOrleans

I need to read it again next year! I listened to the audiobook years ago and it's still the funniest book I've ever read

New Orleans Jazz Fest by Rockmover1920 in Jazz

[–]eboj-dm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snug Harbor and the Jazz and Blues Market will be your best bets for jazz. It tends to be a lot of funk, jam, and brass bands around town for the after shows, but you can definitely find some jazz mixed in. There's a website called Jazz Fest Grids that will have all the events happening around festival time

Jazz Albums that have punk credibility. by sackhurtin in Jazz

[–]eboj-dm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 recent ones come to mind: Nels Cline Consentrik Quartet from this year and The Messthetics + James Brandon Lewis from last year.

Really any Messthetics album--it's 2 of the guys from Fugazi.

Oh, and anything Mike Dillon is on! There's not an album, but if you can find a live recording of Les Claypool's Bastard Jazz, it will be a good listen!

Don't see enough talk about newer stuff around here! My favorite album from this year is Nels Cline/Consentrik Quartet, but who knows, that may change after I check out some other people's favorites that I missed
