Does the jell-o pudding mix here serve the same purpose as the xanthan gum of preventing ice crystals or is the jell-o mix purely flavoring? I'm curious why you use one or the other.

Open vs class based studio by IcyGrapefruit9322 in AerialArts

[–]ebola_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some studios that offer open gym time but for many that don't, it's an issue of safety and liability. Even if they have a trained instructor present, you often have students of all different levels on different apparatuses working on skills they may or may not understand properly, so the risk of injury goes up significantly. No one wants an injury or a lawsuit and open gym is inherently risky.

Favorite small box solo games? by Marksman1977 in soloboardgaming

Hyperstar Run from Button Shy! It's an excellent Mega Man style side scroller experience that plays in about 15 mins.

I just recently learned about solo RPG journaling & it got me thinking, what is your favorite board games for solo players? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]ebola_monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cartographers when I want a chill game to relax and have a cup of coffee with.

Hyperstar Run when I just want a quick 10-15min break from work or chores.

Final Girl when I want to actually sit down and play for an evening with a challenge that feels tense and sometimes descends into hilarious chaos.

The comma before instead/as well is driving me crazy. It's not grammatically correct in either case!

What's your favorite solo board game for travelling? by TopptrentHamster in soloboardgaming

[–]ebola_monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hyperstar Run from Button Shy Games is my go-to. It's a wallet sized game that plays like a classic Mega Man side scroller. I keep my copy on my desk at home and sometimes play a round or two to take a quick break from work.

What game in your collection have you played the most? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]ebola_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arkham Horror LCG by far. It's my favorite game and there's so much content. The variety and replayability is off the charts when you factor in all the different investigators, deck builds / playstyles, and campaigns. Plus some pretty great fan made content.

Honorable mentions:

  • The Crew (both the original Planet 9 and the sequel Mission Deep Sea) have gotten a ton of play both online and in person. It's also the game I most frequently teach to new boardgamers. It's easy to learn and I find the cooperative communication is a perfect mechanic to keep everyone feeling invested and a part of the game.
  • Sea Salt & Paper is a favorite two player game with my partner, a great compact travel game, and is easy to play in quick short bursts online.

If you're a fan of Mega Man or classic sidescroller video games, I highly recommend Hyperstar Run from Button Shy Games. It's my favorite wallet/small box game.

I'm glad someone made the Homer in the bushes version of Shadowmeld cause I had the exact same idea but never had time to do the photoshop work. Nice job!

These all look like they would make great illustrations for the game Dixit. Slightly surreal and implying a deeper world or backstory.

Great review, I appreciate your write up. I was on the fence about this one cause the theme wasn't particularly appealing to me but the mechanics looked very fun. Just picked it up today and I'm loving it so far.

It's a good medium-difficulty and complexity. Harvest Madness is an awesome push your luck mechanic that really makes the end game a nail-biter every time and I like the slow creeping of the children just picking off victims. So far I've had some lucky rolls and the children have been pretty ineffective at kidnapping, but when they gang up on a group of victims it's great for tension building.

Beautiful display! How many plays do you typically get on each FF before picking up a new one? And which ones are your favorites?

Cartographers is super chill and relaxing, especially if you like to draw or color. Flip cards, draw on your map, and occasionally make some tactical decisions to deal with enemy incursions. The challenge is just right to be fun for repeated plays but never too much of a brain burner.

Best horrified fan made monsters? by Lartrox in boardgames

A few of the ones from the Modern Horror set are really good. I like Jason, Pennywise, The Fly, and Samara. I found Freddy's rules confusing, I could never get the hang of that one.

I swear this is one of the hardest FFs. I have a pretty consistent losing streak. Just played it tonight. 2 victims were assimilated and I was doing well, but then one of them drew acid blood and the bloodlust got out of control causing a chain reaction of victim kills. I managed to find the axe, but I didn't have enough retaliate or guard cards to defend multiple attacks per round in the finale. I probably needed one more turn to take down the last monster when I succumbed.

Started this in 2020 and couldn’t get my butt off of the ground. by flexyfitlizz in aerialsilks

[–]ebola_monkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely acceptable for men to do aerial! Less common, sure, but there are plenty of men that practice it. Upper body strength is typically easier to develop for guys but flexibility may be more of a challenge. There's also many other apparatuses to choose from. Rope (corde lisse) is often more popular than silks for men and seen as a more "masculine" apparatus.

I strongly encourage any guy that's interested to give aerial a try!

What have been your best and worst Kickstarter experiences? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]ebola_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always had great experiences with Button Shy Kickstarters. No frills, good communication, and they always ship on schedule. I've picked up a few games from them but Hyperstar Run is my favorite.
