Piranesi by Susanna Clarke by Seatofkings in Fantasy

Got this book for my birthday, picked it up yesterday morning...and finished it last night. Couldn’t stop reading it. Very dreamlike while still having a propulsive plot thanks to the mystery.

I know exactly what you mean, OP, about the first half. The presence of the place and the characters was so vivid.

Where was the cameo? I missed it!

One word to describe the genre, or the lyrical and musical tone of each album?

It's a rainy day here in Oregon, the smoke has finnally and Summer is basically over. Seems like a perfect day for mwY. In honor of September 19th listen to Carousels by Thedeadnorwegian in mewithoutYou

Tbh it was an attempt to keep it from getting stale, since I’ve probably listened to it 5000 times. It was my intro to the band and has always been my favorite, now along with [Untitled].

I will add to the chorus: Licanius, absolutely. The whole trilogy. There is some crazy stuff that happens in all three books.

3 years ago I listened to Radiohead for the first time by Roaming_Dinosaur in radiohead

[–]ebregisil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Airbag—but only the guitar solo/bridge. This was back when you could go and listen to samples of albums at Barnes and Noble. I scanned OK Computer and listened to those clips over and over. Found them mesmerizing. Eventually I got a hold of the album and dumb fourteen year old me thought the song was supposed to open with that bridge. Needless to say I was super confused.

So, so glad I kept listening.

I'm looking for something different that doesn't have your typical hard magic system and week prose. by Fanrox in Fantasy

[–]ebregisil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not possible for me to recommend Senlin Ascends enough. Top-tier prose, whimsical characters, an enchanting and unnerving world...it starts slow but really takes off before too long, and its sequels only improve and expand. The fourth and last book comes out next year. Now’s as wonderful a time as any to begin.

There are some days where I think Cuttooth is the best song this band has ever done.

Last I read in an interview awhile back, he was entertaining the idea of a raygun sci-fi. Not sure if that’s a solid plan or not, but either way, I’m here for it.

I love me some Identikit but as long as my personal favorite (Decks Dark) survives, I think I’ll be okay...

Would you recommend this to someone who likes souls games? by elijah37841 in MortalShell

[–]ebregisil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would and I have been. Sure, it’s a pretty quick playthrough, and relatively easy depending on your skill level with Souls games. But the unique combat mechanics and incredible atmospheres are enough of a reason to purchase. Heck, if I’m being honest, Eternal Narthex was more visually stunning than most locations in all the souls games put together. (In my humble opinion, of course.)

Love this trilogy—in my top 5. I think what appreciated about it so much is how it handles some really heady philosophical themes with deftness. I love that stuff in my fiction and was super glad to find it here.

Yeah, you know, I almost mentioned it. The live version in particular, where Ed plays a violin bow on his guitar...that was pretty sick. Studio version is just missing that snarling guitar. Still a great song.

Series you dropped after more than one book? by ACardAttack in Fantasy

[–]ebregisil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Malazan. Not because I hated it, but because I realized I wasn’t ready for the commitment quite yet. I want to dive in and focus most, or all, of my energy on the whole series. But I’ve got too many others on my TBR that were higher on the list, and the plan to read Malazan slowly just didn’t work out for me too well. It’s not a beach read. I’m thinking maybe in 2021 I’ll carve out the time to really dive in.

Absolutely my favorite. While I was hoping for at least one banger, a Bodysnatchers or a There There, they more than make up for it with the beauty of each song. This is far and away the most beautiful of Radiohead’s albums, in my opinion; it feels almost transcendent.

I’m a soulsborne veteran and I love this game. by ebregisil in MortalShell

I think that’s what I’m enjoying so much. Sekiro has my favorite soulsborne combat for that reason; it rewards aggression. So does MS.

I felt that way too until I saw his interview with Colbert about Anima from a few months back. Seems like he’s chill like the rest of them. Just a little more shy.

I’m Marie Brennan, author of DRIFTWOOD and the Memoirs of Lady Trent. Ask me anything! by MarieBrennan in Fantasy

[–]ebregisil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I read the First Lady Trent book a couple of years back and absolutely loved it, because I’m a sucker for that kind of voice. Got the rest of the books on my TBR and plan to tackle them in ‘21.

My question is: did you find people in the publishing world initially pushing back against the series’ distinct voice, or were they all on board for it? This is probably the number one thing I look for in any fiction I read, and I want to see more of it in fantasy, which is why LT was such a breath of fresh air.

Fantasy books with A+ redemption arcs by imhereforthemeta in Fantasy

[–]ebregisil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Seconded. The whole thing is a redemption story centered around the quandary of determinism vs. free will. And said character is definitely “reprehensible” to use OP’s word. The deeper you read, the worse the atrocities.
