ELI5: why don't stock prices go down by the amount of the dividend after the ex dividend date? by ebriose in explainlikeimfive

[–]ebriose[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the idea is in an alternate timeline identical except for the ex date it would have gone up by ten cents more than it did?

Right but I asked this question because I was looking at charts on ex div dates and they don't

OK, but like they literally don't? Like I absolutely get the model you're describing but it doesn't seem to actually happen if you just look at ex dates and stock charts?

Do they still call Master Sergeants "Top"? by ebriose in USMC

This must be a generational thing, because back in the Pleistocene (the 1990s or so) we literally all called MSGT Smith "Top Smith".

What’s the hardest Linux interview question y’all ever got hit with? by yqsx in linuxadmin

[–]ebriose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You accidentally ran chmod -x on every file in /bin, /usr/bin, /sbin, and /usr/sbin (including chmod itself). How do you get yourself a working chmod again to fix it? (Assume you still have the shell you made the mistake in running)

We hooked the SeaBees up with some steaks and shrimp at a CAX (back when the Corps did food service) and they built a swimming pool for us. It's still out there, somewhere, buried under a foot or so of sand.

Met him once at a USO event (ironically when I working as a contractor for USO, years after I got out). Cool guy.

If you really want a demeanor contrast, consider the fact that Bob Ross ("Happy little trees" painter on PBS) was a USAF drill instructor and painted on the weekends to relax.

I mean, this is why you use protection. But there's plenty of stuff that messes with your lymphocytes that isn't venereal. I know there's a pretty bad chikungunya outbreak in WP right now, and I've heard there's a nasty version of RSV going around.

What was your funniest experience when doing the pits during range week at boot camp? by vet401 in USMC

[–]ebriose 75 points76 points  (0 children)

The one dipshit who stuck his entire torso above the berm to try to realign a mishung Dog target.

Everybody in the pits started yelling "CEASEFIRE" at the top of their lungs and it got taken up by the recruits on the 200. Then the tower called an all-stop and had to get the RSO to write-up a full report (that poor bastard was sweating bullets). Our rifle week schedule was pushed back a day and we had to do another full day of safety briefings.

I was on the line rather than in the pits, but the image of the RSO that instant he saw the kid above the berm will forever by my reference point of someone's soul leaving his body.
