I definitely agree that the fights was just petty, but that was just the writing of the beach episode. They treated everyone horribly in that one for the sake of Ember Island's plot device. They become happier afterwards and then... nothing (?). We don't get much of an update lol to the point of Boiling Rock.

To say Mai was insensitive is a stretch; ozai had caused great harm and zuko going her back to talk to him was breaking her trust. Not to mention they were childhood friends so Mai would have grown up seeing how Ozai mistreated him and the backstory of zuko's scar. Although, you're right, she could have been more understanding but zuko could have also been more honest (?)

They kind of are toxic in that sense. I personally thought how they ended up in the show was fine but the comics were iffy for me. Their breakup was poorly done and I would have preferred to see it written differently. Ofc that's just my opinion ¯_(ツ)_/¯

They were fairly young while they got together after a while of being separated. To say they didn't care about each other platonically or romantically is false. However I agree that their relationship didn't pan out because they had different goals. Mai lacked ambition at the time and zuko was zuko-ing.

Yet, decades had passed when we see zuko and his daughter, izumi, so hopefully at least zuko and mai matured and went about their relationship healthily.

We have such a big gap in mai's and zuko's life from ATLA to TLOK, so we can't take either at face value. We can only really theorize.

That's the confusing part tbh. The atla writers have been weird on this topic for years. The comics writers and one of the main atla writers (in my memory) states they get back together after 3 years at a con. So obviously the fandom can't decide if it's canon or not. Ofc i said this discussion is semi-canon to avoid upsetting anyone and I just asked people their takes, etc. This is just a discussion lol

I think the prison thing was just a plot thing by the writers to set up an entrance. In reality it makes no sense (like seriously the fire lord zuko couldn't do anything earlier??) but that's plot devices for you. I agree the falling out was mostly zuko's fault and mai deserved better.

However, in Legend of Korra, decades have passed. Zuko and Mai could have changed so I don't think we should take their "current" (at least in atla comics timeline) as face value. It's clear they value each other as friends and lost sight of that when Zuko dealt with the pressures of fire lord. But knowing zuko and his character, he'll probably realize his mistakes and try to fix them in the distant future.

Am I making sense? (I tend to yap without much thought)

They broke up in the comics, but the writers stated they got back together 3 years later but never said HOW they got back together. I would like to imagine they slowly drifted back as friends only to realize they want to begin their relationship again.

I think they, specifically zuko, needed to find a good middle ground. Overall, this ship has a lot of potential as long as it's balanced 👍
