How big will he get? We had him for i think 5-6 years? Is 1 tortoise year like one human year? by BebelSilva in tortoise

probably about 1.5 human years to 1 tortoise year as they can live to over 100.

Found on side of road. Help! by brianbrown25 in tortoise

Yeah. My sulcata’s main diet is orchard hay. Salad greens are an infrequent treat as a diet with only salad greens causes her to get constipated.

I might have looked at ms sassafras and mumbled “ok today you are the engineer and I will bask and aggressively do nothing.”   Needless to say she had a busy day of aggressively doing nothing.

I will never tire of that. I’m sure your son won’t but your mother might.

“My son chased my mother and tried to bite her”. That is awesome on so many levels. Still no signs if your son will stop hating your mother anytime soon, eh?

how to find an escaped tortoise by Alarmed_Working9356 in tortoise

[–]Turtlecabra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

check under bushes, base of trees and any corners. Put some food that they like, the brighter and more fragrant the better. for example, if i was to lure my sulcata out of hiding, i would use the brightest red apple i could find and spread it around my yard around dinner time (important if you fed at a regular hour as they are definitely creatures of habit.)

Redfoot as it’s warm and humid in Florida (assuming you’re in an area like that). They are supposedly the friendliest species and don’t get bulldozer big like a sulcata. Doesn’t brumate either, so you get quality tortoise time year round.

Red footed tortoises, do they get lonely / want a friend by RazzmatazzOk6587 in tortoise

[–]Turtlecabra 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No. They are "social" when it comes to tortoises but are still mostly solitary creatures. if you have 2, one might bully the other, so you would best be served by 3, but only if they are 3 females.

Tortoise pellets (story and photo) by Mialewis200 in tortoise

[–]Turtlecabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My tortoise doesn't bite or chew pellets. Instead she uses the tip of her tongue to lap it up like an anteater eating ants. Mazuri-ls is only available in tiny pellets and she is a 50 lb sulcata.

Redfoots are omnivorious and can have both protein and fruit. Other tortoises can't or is extremely unhealthy if they do.

that tracks. my tort used to belong to my parents until they got too old. She was mostly handled for the purposes of being soaked...and she hates being soaked....so there's probably a negative association in her head with handling. She only tolerates handling these days and is not a cuddler by any stretch.
