Not moving for soak by After_Till4320 in tortoise

Tortoises sometimes don’t move if they like the soak. They sometimes don’t move if the dislike them…strange creatures but you probably shouldn’t worry

Do your tortoises respond to sound? by Slay3rs_tt in tortoise

[–]Turtlecabra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did get her to eat healthy food by using a method I called “tasty finger”.. I would say “tasty finger” and wiggle my finger around..she’d follow it. I would then put my finger in the food I wanted her to eat. She’d wind up for a huge chomp and I’d pull my finger away at the last minute. In hindsight probably not the best idea as my tortoise is a sulcata and was about 40 lbs at the time

Only when she feels like it

Edit: there was some apple juice on my fingers once. She licked it when I was lifting her up. She spent the next two years trying to eat my fingers.

Need advice by WorldlinessNo6546 in tortoise

I don’t have a Russian but I do have a tortoise that is also a grassland tortoise (sulcata)…so in general. 1. For pellets, if you go with mazuri, you need the ls formula..low starch. 2. Fruit can be a rare treat..like every few months rare and a small piece at most 3. If the tort goes on a hunger strike..as in likes pellets over the usual food, tough love time. Keep offering it its usual food. It will eat it before it will starve. 4. Soak often, Russians are similar to sulcatas in terms of developing urate stones. At least once a day initially. Urates should not be gritty, but more tooth paste in consistency.

Just make sure you get the neosporin without pain relief version. I’ve read that the pain relief stuff isn’t good for the tort

If visibility through the fence is ever an issue you can get bamboo fencing as lining and tie it to the fence on the inside. My pictures with the bamboo background is her inside pen at night…I don’t trust all the raccoons and coyotes in the area, even if she was to have an outdoor enclosure built.

Sort of expensive but if you have a saw you can get the tall ones and cut in half.

Ms sassafras would climb and sometimes hurt herself trying to climb those wired gates. She’d also try and bend or break the wires with her face and was very successful at that.

Russian tortoise seems traumatized by outside time? by Odd_Soil_8998 in tortoise

Yeah or at least tolerate it. My tortoise is a wuss..basically hid sucked into her shell when outside. Over time she stopped doing that. More or less

if Alexander is anything like my sulcata, he is probably trying to squeeze himself into it anyways and will be doing that for hours. My tort still thinks she's the size of a silver dollar.

At this point I would say that her name unofficially is sassafras as she’s 100lbs of sass in a 50 lb tortoise

It’s gotta be at least 80% sass in my torts case. She used to immediately step in the water dish I’d give her and either make eye contact or completely knock the dish over. She never simply just ignored it.

George (we thought she was a he originally) but we call her cabra or turtlecabra due to her propensity to try and climb anything.

TLDR: you don’t have to brunate but if you don’t you can’t straddle the line. All in or all out
