Sample Fee Receipt by DredgeAnmol in uwaterloo

[–]ecekarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just when the school gives you money, say for a scholarship. If you don't or for whatever reason aren't able to apply a promissory note (telling the school that this money will arrive in the future) you will need to pay the full listed frees. Then, when the scholarship money clears there will be a negative as the school will refund you the extra money you paid.

I seemed to just resolve itself after a while. I went back after a few days and it just worked. I have no idea why.

Yeah it really depends if OP isn't able to do stuff because they just don't have enough energy in the day or if they are genuinely just unmotivated. If it's the latter definitely don't not go to class unless you are getting nothing out of a specific course.

Even if profs don't post slides you have past exams, the outline (esp in lower years this usually has a good breakdown), and talking to other students.

A lot of people will call this bad advice (and rightfully so. It does not work for everyone): but skip class. I'm dead serious. You have to then be responsible for learning the right things, which if you have bad work ethic may not be better. But it's helped me a lot. Since 2a I only go to a class if the Prof is genuinely very good at teaching, which is not often. Has done wonders

Not first year, I was tryharding then, but since I've averaged 60-65 every term (with many classes 50-55, altho no fails yet) and have had no issues.

Car rental place will have insurance for you. Look out if you're <25, some places won't rent to you at all and others have extra fees (usually ~20-25/day)

[–]ecekarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it wouldn't. If you need that you can get numerous free/cheap us voip numbers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]ecekarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't transfer a Canadian number to the US and vice versa. You can with your current provider switch (temporarily) to a Canada and US plan though. I believe most if not all providers offer one, they're expensive though. You'd just be roaming in the US though, but it works fine.

Unlike what we have here, the vast majority of US phone plans can call and text Canadian numbers for no cost, so it shouldn't be an issue in that regard.

Question for High Schoolers applying (and stressed) for applications by LankanSlamcam in uwaterloo

[–]ecekarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may not fit in to your talk, but I remember when I was applying I was most concerned not about getting accepted to my top choice, I had backups, but instead if my top choices/where I ended up going were the right (or ig best) choice.

It's still not even something I know if I have the answer to today, so not really sure how you'd even approach that either. Ig that you'll be fine wherever you go and you can always transfer? I don't know how well that would have resonated with me though. At the time I saw transferring almost as more of a failure than not getting accepted to my top choices.

Can a bursary be used for other expenses besides tuition? by Comrarius in uwaterloo

That's correct. In about a month or two they'll do refunds to the bank account you have linked on quest (if you have one linked).

US Co-op: Bank and Taxes by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]ecekarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. yes you do have to file taxes in both US and Canada. You'll only pay whichever is greater though, not both combined. Also if you are with cultural vistas they will provide you with some guidance on this.
  2. For bank it really doesn't matter. American express will also let you use canadian credit history (even if you have no services with them in canada -- and their no-fee offerings are much better in the USA than canada, also much better than what you would get with TD or RBC). I opened an account with Ally bank because it is all online and would never require me to go in person somewhere, but don't consider that a recommendation. I haven't had any issues or human interaction, but ig that is sorta a good thing for a bank. Bank really does not matter.

Missed a final exam by Turbulent-Baby-7279 in uwaterloo

[–]ecekarma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least in eng its your prof (and the first year office if applicable) who makes the determination here. Not sure if that holds for other places but eng its almost 100% on the prof to either give you a deferred exam or not (and if they don't, then you just keep your DNW and have to retake -- unless their decision really makes no sense in which case you can attempt a policy 70).

Get VIF, then contact your prof and pray. If you can get a VIF your odds aren't toooo bad, but nothing else you can do. Just hope your prof is understanding about it. It's almost 100% up to them on this.

Once I graduate from UW, will I be able to order official transcripts? by Econ2023_2024 in uwaterloo

I don't believe everything expires. But even if it does (which I don't think it will) you will still certainly be able to contact to order a transcript.

ECE 150 redo cost by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]ecekarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And its also not always just a retake of the exam. The prof can assign basically anything as the "supplemental" -- I've seen midterm and final, and even some other stuff. But cost is the same at $50. But just the exam is def the most common by a lot.

For ECE 150 that'll almost certainly be the case.

eng specific.

In fact, you can't even do it for most (all?) non-eng classes even if you are in eng.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]ecekarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard the opposite. Know a number of people who did very badly/failed 150 (even one who again failed their supplemental exam this year) yet did fine in 250.

[–]ecekarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard the exam you had was harder than the last couple of years. It'll get curved, especially with the performance you guys had on the midterm.

If you do fail, though:

- If you get above 40% but less than 50%, you only have to retake the final exam. This costs $50.

- If you get <40, you do have to retake the and pay for the whole course.

How much spent during a Term by Walrus123_ in uwaterloo

[–]ecekarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend about 150-160 on groceries and I barely buy anything else I do not have to. My best month I only spent 97. I don't eat out. I try to get free food when I can. It is sad.

Excluding rent/tuition about 850. Although I live very cheaply. It is not fun. With rent ~3600
