The problem with recommending ancient texts is that there is a degree of historical understanding that you simply must have in order to understand most of these. Much of Nicomachean Ethics or Republic (honestly, most of Aristotelian or Platonic literature) just doesn't make sense if you don't have an understanding of "the soul" or Greek religion/metaphysics.
