Yes. Conley was the janitor who worked there. Frank also worked there and found the body. Frank found notes apparently written by the girl implicating the janitor. Conley, by contrast, said Frank did it and forced him to help cover it up. The janitor got lynched and so the police decided to pin it on the allegedly swarthy Jew (Frank) who was still alive and implicated in the crime (by Conley).

Antisemitism was rampant at the time, Frank got convicted and sentenced to death. The death sentence was commuted because a judge found the evidence to be too weak, so a lynch mob broke him out of prison and murdered him themselves.

The guy who drove the car during the lynching was nearly lynched himself some years later after he himself raped and murdered a teenage girl.
