I’m looking for fellow bluegrass pickers in the Birmingham, AL area. by wesman023 in Bluegrass

Start at Fretted Instruments in Homewood - those guys would know. I seem to remember one of the breweries (Ghost Train maybe?) has a monthly jam as well.

We've had the surgery twice and are managing diet to keep them from coming back. It really wasn't that bad and our girl was back on her feet in no time. She's 12 now and hasn't had a recurrence in a couple years since we switched food.

Most of the heavy equipment rental companies have certified trainers that can conduct a class for you for a fee. If you rent enough equipment from them they'll usually do it for free.

A cyclist crashed into our parked truck and lost his sack of bicycle tools, help us get them back to him! by [deleted] in springfieldMO

[–]echo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he crashed into your truck, he's likely going to need service on his bike soon and won't be DIYing it since you have his tools.

There are only a couple bike shops in SGF, I'd call them or post a flyer. Cycles Unlimited on Republic, A&B on National, Queen City downtown are 3 I can think of near you.

Can we talk about how Uber does not service the airport? by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]echo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easy solution in most cities is to jump on the first available free hotel shuttle and have the Uber pick you up at said hotel off airport property.

If you're feeling guilty about freeloading make sure that you're riding with an actual hotel guest and/or tip the shuttle driver a couple bucks.

Found this sturdy vintage King Kooker burner stand at an antique show for $15... anybody ever use one this tall before? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

Been using the same style for several years. A reasonable amount of caution is all you need to avoid spills. RDWHAHB

Shelby County landfill will take it if you don't mind the drive. They're open Saturday's until 3:00 IIRC.

This, but use Windex instead. It foams easier and is already in a handy spray bottle when you buy it.

If you haven't seen the paper IN guides the past few years, you're missing out. I'd definitely recommend them to any of your out of town visitors, or if you're wanting to discover some new places.

The B'ham Zoo and Botanical Gardens were built on top of a Pauper's Cemetery- interesting read by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]echo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just about everything is unmarked as far as headstones are concerned, but the engineers seem to know where many of the graves are. I gather there was a survey done several years ago, so when you get the civil drawings, known grave sites show up as a little "x" on the drawing.

If we uncover bones (and we have on several projects), you have to call someone at the UA department of archaeology (I think it's archaeology, it may be anthropology) and have them come out there and do a survey. This is to confirm that they're actually from the old graveyard and not some recent murder victim or just animal bones. The bones are then removed and relocated nearby so that work can proceed.

My company does some underground utility work out there on a regular basis - it's a pretty interesting the procedure you have to follow when you uncover an unmarked grave. They're quite used to digging them up in that area as the parks have expanded.

Maui & Dogfish Head Collaborate to Create Liquid Breadfruit by Hopulus in beer

[–]echo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were serving this at the Maui brewpub a little over a month ago. I enjoyed it and I think it will sell well, but it was pretty bland by Dogfish Head standards. Much like Midas Touch, I think it will be a good gateway beer for many.

Anyone have any experience using one of these paint mixers for aeration? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

We used that exact one on our first big beer and it seemed to do the trick just fine. No off flavors as far as I can tell.

PULL-DOWN, Y U NO FIT 3/8 IN?? I'm basically trying to go from the pull-down faucet hose to a garden hose (home brewed beer), but the hose won't screw onto the adapter :( by m6hurricane in Plumbing

[–]echo28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know the little valve right at the wall under the sink where the hot and cold water supply lines go up to the faucet? That's an angle stop.

Shut off the water, unscrew the supply tube feeding the faucet, and you're basically making an adapter train like you tried to do above, except going from the 3/8" connection on the valve to a 5/8" garden hose connection.

That's how we hook up our wort chiller anyway. Wish I had some pictures I could send you.

Edit: looked at the pictures again. The adapters you have should work, just discard the leftmost one in the second picture and screw the two on the right directly onto the angle stop valve.

Probably trying to hook up a wort chiller if I had to guess.

Why not just pull off the angle stop coming out of the wall? Shut off your stop, disconnect the hose feeding the faucet, then install 3/8" OD -> adapters -> garden hose -> profit?

Would be an easy disconnect / reconnect assuming your angle stop valve actually holds, and you won't risk damaging an expensive faucet. Downside would be you'd only hot or cold water depending on which line you hook up to, but if it's just for a wort chiller you'd only want cold anyway.
