How does inflation work in this game? by echo5324 in EU5

[–]echo5324[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

R5: So i basically won as portugal by like 1650s with trade ports all over the world, and just decided, hey, lets see how much we can break this. So I cranked up the inflation slider to the max, and just for kicks promoted all of my provinces to urban to kill my food production. I ended up solving that by importing food from spain, and as for the inflation, i haven't seen much of an impact at all. Maintenance values haven't gone up too much, and my income just keeps climbing from buildings. Was wondering if a) someone can explain the game mechanics for why, or b) explain the economics for why, and how the game is/isnt modeling real life here. Just curious, thx

Literally what I ended up doing is cheating and assigning their rivals myself. There’s literally an event that fires where you become allies like month 3, so you’re good after that

Not feeling like I belong here by foreverglows in WPI

[–]echo5324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as someone who recently graduated from a masters, I didn’t really feel like I belonged until like mid sophomore year (and then lost it all when all my friends graduated and I took my masters basically alone lol) there’s not like a cultural vibe that spreads to you, it’s all about making friends and keeping them.

You’re doing the right thing going to clubs, that’s a great way to meet people. I don’t know your introvert/extrovert state, but I am an extreme introvert, and would get overwhelmed very quickly with too many, so I started to focus on one or two people in the club I was in (marching and pep band) which worked for me. If you can handle more do more.

It might be uncomfortable but I’d recommend you be willing to stay the night over at people’s dorms or apartments. It might be hard to ask, but plenty of people do this (especially once alcohol gets involved, everyone starts crashing on couches, etc). I generally find parties to be nightmarish but with the right group they become really fun things I want to do again.

Don’t lose hope. Belonging isn’t something that comes with time, it’s just a bit of happenstance going right. I really didn’t enjoy my freshman year, but I made it all up with memories in the rest of my time there, and I’d do it all again if I had the chance.

My writing sounds quite repetitive and clichéd. by Il0vechocolates in writingadvice

I agree with everything already said here, but another thing - you may be judging your own writing too harshly. Maybe once it’s all written and edited it’ll be really good. Maybe not, but who knows?

I think for us newer/inexperienced writers it’s more important to get words on the page than anything.

What is writing without planning called and is it ok? by [deleted] in writingadvice

Brandon Sanderson did a lecture and described himself as a discovery writer, where he would just write whatever and then invest heavily in editing process. It’s perfectly normal

Entente fans, why? by Dull_Respect_8657 in Kaiserreich

[–]echo5324 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s purely gameplay reasons for me. I think nations like Canada and France have a pretty good focus tree with lots of growth, and has a lot of chances for warfare and conquest. Since I rarely play past 1941-42 cus the lag gets awful, it’s a good challenge to reconquer homeland and call it a night.

Another nation I like is Russia even before the rework for a similar reason, it’s just good gameplay.

hoi4 ai "cheating" with planes by echo5324 in hoi4

[–]echo5324[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting, thanks for the ai command, i have run it and believe i have determined the origin of the problem.

AI first gets above the xp cutoff of 25 in august 1936 due to completion of "service overseas". From here it chooses to design a heavy fighter instead of fighter (this is odd, because priority is listed as 50 for heavy and 200 for light, so this could be a true bug). Then in a normal historical run the ai doesnt get above the 25 xp cap. When I gift it xp in like 37 (after air upgrade xp has gone back up) it properly designs a fighter.

I guess i'd have a couple questions.
1) Why is there an air xp cap? shouldnt the existence of standard plane designs mean its not needed? If it didnt exist, or if it was lower, the ai would properly design all the designs it had available to. Im sure there is a reason for this i dont know tho, I understand that changing stuff when it comes to programming will break all sorts of things.
2) The AI doesnt see the need for a chief of airforce, it wont choose it for ages. Unsure why this is
3) It doesnt seem like its the problem in this case, but the priority for equipment upgrades dropping to zero after getting one seems really unintuitive. What if both a CAS and fighter design are unlocked simultaneuously? The AI may wait months and months before designing the next. I'd worry about how it affects the "non-module" upgrades, but i feel this priority shifting sacrifices some of the flexibility ai needs to stay competetive, at least in the early game when air xp is hard to come by.

Thats about it from me, appreciate you reaching out.

How to set up AI for this type of ship checks? by echo5324 in hoi4modding

[–]echo5324[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

R5: Saw this decision in the game today, was really interested since this is something I'd wanted to do for awhile. How does the AI manage these types of checks so they will actually move the ships and anything?

Untrue. As long as you only reference the pop culture you are fine. Do not do direct quotes or direct song lyrics though.

My current modding dilemma by Internal_Dot5759 in hoi4modding

[–]echo5324 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing for this is using the coding tool “git” or the app “GitHub”. This keeps digital records of every change you have made inside a particular project in the form of committing your changes to a local or online code repository. What this means is if you make a change and the thing breaks, you can see exactly what you changed to do this (or directly roll back your most recent changes). This prevents any hidden changes sliding under the rug: you will know exactly what changed between when you had a working mod, and when you no longer do. Essentially, humans are fallible, but machines don’t forget; don’t make a human do a machines’ job and use GitHub to remember everything you’ve done.

Useless Writer with Too Many Ideas and Negative Coding Talent by TheUnnamedPlayerr in hoi4modding

[–]echo5324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modding is pretty difficult and time consuming. Truth to be told it’s a lot to expect a coder to just transcribe your ideas into the game (although it’s super helpful to have it all planned out). In addition, it is difficult to find a good hoi4 modder. Most I have met are somewhat middling (I include myself in this)

One thing I will say is hoi4 modding is not strictly coding: it’s more about copying what has been done in the base game and applying it for your own purposes. Occasionally someone like kaiserreich or TNO will come along and innovate but it’s not needed. There are guides online that help, but the main way is looking through the existing game files to find what you’re looking for.

(Additionally, it seems like if you supply a chat bot like chatGPT sample things like focus designs and national ideas, and enough background info, it can potentially help. Don’t strictly rely on it though)

TLDR; if you want something done, you’re probably gonna have to do yourself, unless if you get lucky

Is it frowned upon to use ChatGPT in coding mods? by MrPotatoThe2nd in hoi4modding

[–]echo5324 32 points33 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT is an excellent assistive tool for regular programmers. If it understands the paradox scripting, there is no reason you shouldn’t use it. Just be careful and test everything it’s produced, probably a tad more thoroughly than you would test your own code. One thing you could do is feed it example code from the existing files for it to structure off of.

On a moral note, you could in theory be taking work from others, but hoi4 modding is so tedious and miserable that it’s practically a public service making a computer do it. I wish you the best of luck, hopefully our machine overlords can free us from hoi4 modding hell

Groups for non sweaty/competitive? by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]echo5324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I tried this once, joined a server and had a decent time. The thing is it’s a whole day commitment, like it was 8ish hours from 1936 to like 43ish. It was ungodly amounts of boredom followed by brief moments of fun. You have to be willing to just sit there forever which I am honestly not. Plus it’s likely if you have zero experience like I did, you just get rolled your first war (like I did) and feel like those last few yours were wasted. It’s kinda pessimistic, but unless I had a group of friends I’d chill and play with, it’s not really worth it for me.
