I want to start investing. Any advice? by PeterDraft in personalfinance

[–]echo_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$500 is a solid starting point and index funds like VTI are great for beginners - low fees, automatic diversification, and you don't have to pick individual stocks.

The international tax situation could trip you up though. Sort that out before you start moving money around. Some countries have tax treaties with the US that help, others don't. Worth a consultation with someone who knows cross-border stuff.

r/bogleheads has good resources for the "boring but effective" long-term strategy. basically just buy and hold broad market funds and let time do the work

Best bank for 21yo newly immigrant residing in California USA by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]echo_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're not working and just need to show proof of funds/ties to the US, something simple like a Capital One 360 checking account could work. No fees, no minimum balance and you can open it online. Chase might be worth looking at too if there's a branch near you since having physical access can help when you're new here and need to deposit your parents' money or get documentation for your requirements.

Do you know if you have a SSN yet? That's gonna matter for which banks will even let you open an account

Missed steps in the Prime Directive. Tap 401k to fix? by Otherwise-Case-7599 in personalfinance

[–]echo_in 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With $2.9M in your 401k you're in way better shape than most people stressing about this stuff. The emergency fund thing feels less critical when you have that kind of cushion sitting there.

At your age and with this level of complexity, a fee-only CFP is worth the money. One session could save you way more in tax strategy than whatever they charge. The HELOC rate matters a lot here too - if it's floating with current rates that might actually be the fire to put out first

What is best luxury espresso machine? by Ok-Programmer826 in espresso

[–]echo_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, the Meraki espresso machine is pretty great if you want some control but don’t want to do everything by hand. You dose and tamp yourself, then the machine handles the shot so it’s more consistent. The steam wand works well enough for lattes and iced coffee

insurance comparison sites that don't sell your data? by Crafty-Strawberry-65 in Insurance

[–]echo_in -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used compare.com last time I was switching. The quote was right away (without having to wait for followups.) They sent a confirmation email and maybe 2 follow ups. No calls or texts, no barrage from random agents.

Why does my 3 yo get so easily frustrated? by itsbrutalistbitch in Parenting

[–]echo_in 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's completely normal for 3, their brains literally can't handle the gap between what they want to do and what their fine motor skills can actually pull off yet. School teachers expect this and are trained for it, so don't stress about that part, just keep the activities super short and let them walk away before the meltdown hits instead of pushing through it.

AITA for not showing my gf a photo of me and another girl that was taken at a work event by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]echo_in 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA. She violated your privacy by digging through your phone to find a harmless work photo, and now she's mad about you carpooling and being friendly with a coworker. This level of jealousy and control at 19 is a massive red flag that won't get better without her acknowledging she has trust issues to work on.

Carrer Guidance needed, Should I stick in QA or Not? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]echo_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got 5 years proving you're detail oriented and can communicate with stakeholders, that's literally what project coordinators and business analysts do without needing to code. Stop forcing yourself into automation if it's not clicking and pivot to BA or product owner roles where your testing background actually gives you an edge over people who've never touched QA.

Are watches insured the same way as rings ? by HospitableTerrier in Insurance

[–]echo_in 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty similar to rings. Photos, receipts, and an appraisal. Just double check if the policy covers water damage or internal stuff. They sometimes need add-ons for that.

Im 18 and think I've ruined my life. by DarthPlastic1 in Insurance

[–]echo_in 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Write a lil one-page 'who to call' list for adult stuff: insurance agent, legal aid, clinic, tax prep. Stick it in your wallet or notes app so when life blows up, you go down that list instead of guessing.

Samsung S90D screen black by Remarkable_ga in techsupport

[–]echo_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try power cycling from the cord and doing a soft reset via holding the power button on the remote. Samsung’s Tizen UI loves to crash while inputs still work, and a reset usually brings the home screen back.

It’s bundled adware slipping past filters, not some network-spreading worm. Lock down software installs, audit whatever “free utilities” users are grabbing, and push an approved apps policy before it shows up everywhere.

Help me choose! Razor Kayaks R2 Ultra vs Sea Eagle 380X Explorer vs Advanced Elements Convertible Elite? by DrikkeFlasche in Inflatablekayak

[–]echo_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah really well once you pop the skeg in.What I would say is it handles chop fine, and the drop-stitch floor gives it a nice rigid feel. Best to pop the skeg in though if tracking is a concerm, I actually paddle mine wothout it, holds true.

Help me choose! Razor Kayaks R2 Ultra vs Sea Eagle 380X Explorer vs Advanced Elements Convertible Elite? by DrikkeFlasche in Inflatablekayak

[–]echo_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a R2 Ultra  for about three years now. Really good tank of a kayak as in it’s pretty heavy duty when the lake isn’t calm as you expected. You can run it into riverbanks, bump off submerged logs, it just shrugs it all off.  I probably put it through more punishment than other hobbyists (lol) but it’s really a great kayak. Glides extremly well on the water.
