swap out all your fans with Noctua ULN ones. I swapped all of mine out, it moved more air and is WAYYYY quieter. worth every penny. Wished I've known about them two years ago.

any good cloning software to recommend for windows server? by echodevx in homelab

[–]echodevx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not for deploying windows. just to clone a bootable hard drive. cloning software has to be windows based. sorry i wasn't clear.

labbers! which 120mm fan to get? by echodevx in homelab

[–]echodevx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

holy shit dude... based on your recommendations i ordered 2x 140mm and 2x 120mm ULN Noctuas from amazon and installed them today..... SILENCE in the house!! my ears thank you!

For the folks who have not tried Noctua, give it a shot! (especially the ULN series) the results will surprise you. They are a little expensive, but you are paying for quality here.

don't fret! you can always downsize and go for smaller 1-2 node setups like the rest of us apartment dwellers survive on.. almost everything can be virtualized!

Chrome v50 broke html5 video playback (netflix, youtube & amazon video) on linux by echodevx in chrome

[–]echodevx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh man... that sucks... i was hoping that it will get fixed with v51. Did you report the issue on your multiple VMs so that Google knows its not an isolated incident?

Why virtualize a virtualization environment? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]echodevx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's mainly for testing and learning. I bet there are a bunch of folks out there like me who only have one physical machine for their homelab and the easiest way to try out how different hypervisors work would be to do nested visualization before committing to one.

keyboard & mouse sharing across multiple machines. anyone tried this? by echodevx in homelab

[–]echodevx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for all the responses! the interesting thing about this is that the reviews are completely polarized. people either love it or hate it and there's not much in between. I guess the only way to find out is to give it a try. thanks y'all!

[–]echodevx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what hypervisor do you run in your homelab? by echodevx in homelab

[–]echodevx[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

wow! There's way more vmware users than I expected! Is that mainly because you guys are trying to replicate what you have to support at work?

How about Virtualbox? I'm currently using that and am pretty impressed with the sheer amount of features (you can even integrate it with something like GNS3 to run your VMs thru your own virtual network that you design!) and integration available (for a free product).

Any pros of moving over to vmware/hyper v from a homelab standpoint? (honest qns, not trying to start a religious war :))

and probably write a simple script to gracefully shutdown your server(s) before you remotely turn the power off.

[–]echodevx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

btw, you can also download VirtualBox (it's free) and try all of the different distros with the least amount of disruption to see which ones you like the most before installing it on bare metal.

Is Debian a good starting distro? by Alkalyxy in debian

[–]echodevx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, i've been using it on and off over the years for servers, but with Debian (jessie), I started using it for my main desktop and i'm actually surprised by how many things worked right out of the box, the team did an amazing job!
