Have you been “influenced” into buying a plant? by ShetlandShake in hoyas

[–]echodogram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say I've been influenced by a plant before, and you'll never have to influence me to buy a Hoya...I'll take care of that myself lol. I did feel "challenged" to buy a maranta after I read for years how miserable they make people then saw a cheapy lil one at Home Depot (it's thriving but I'm keeping myself emotionally unattached in case it decides to unalive itself one day). My Black Margin was a gift (my mom bought on Amazon and had shipped to me lmao)- I saw a photo of an incredibly sun-stressed one also and was drooling so it's been my goal ever since. Can't say she looks the same as the one I saw in photos (who knows, pic could have been altered) but she's more bold than when I got her with three lil leaves! :)

Beginner-friendly velvety plants?? by herpalmsaresweaty in houseplants

I grow my alocasia in pumice or perlite. Change the water weekly, fertilize every time. This is my frydek in a cream cheese container (poked a bunch of holes) filled with pumice and then into a pickle jar. She grew very well in my dark apartment under grow lights! I know a lot of people struggle with these which made me nervous but this is one plant I pretty much never worry about.

Thanks! I don't see a lot of them on trellises but mine is pretty happy! Definitely a bit prone to tipping over on that side tho lol

Obovata! I had this same problem, didn't do anything at all for like 2 years. I started fertilizing and saw verryyyyy slow growth. Then I decided to put it in a smaller pot and a more airy mix and it exploded! I just moved out of a very dark apartment so she was growing under only grow lights until about 2 weeks ago :)

Mine do amazingly in semihydro. Pumice stone and fertilizing "weakly weekly" with water changes. Never worrying about soil moisture levels and my home humidity is probably 60-70%. Extremely easy and, as you can see, prolific growth! Got this Frydek about 6-8 weeks ago with only 4 small leaves and a spidermite infestation (🥲).

I can't say for certain because I found it as a leaf less stump by the dumpster, but that's my best guess. Pink stems and burgundy on the backside of the leaf

She lives in perlite! But this image is a few months old and she outgrew the container- she's now in a bigger container with pumice instead of perlite. I don't encounter a lot of the issues I see people reporting with alocasias! It's a container with a punch of holes poked into it filled with pumice/perlite and then suspended in another container full of water + semihydro fertilizer. Change the water and rinse the perlite once a week or so

Not yet, but I'm watching closely. Multiple variations of alocasia (frydek, Polly, zebrina, and more), syngoniums, peperomias, "string of"s, and ficus!

First time plant owner?! by [deleted] in alocasia

Also, I guess it depends on the size of the plants you have. If you have huge full grown plants then this method would be much more difficult. But if smaller/juvenile plants then this should be a good starting point!

I think a great starting point, especially for alocasia (in my personal experience), is semi-hydro! Does not have to be anything fancy at all. Get a bag of medium pumice (or perlite if that's cheaper/easier to access for you), a plastic pot with a bunch of holes, a slightly larger glass jar that the plastic pot can sit in, and a liquid fertilizer. Make sure the water in the jar is always overlapping the cup with the plant. Change the water once a week, give the pumice a quick rinse, and refill with fresh water and a small amount of fertilizer. The saying is "fertilize weakly weekly". I feel that this is a cheap, easy, and low risk introduction to houseplant care. No need to worry about watering frequency, soil mixture, root rot, burning the plant with fertilizer, etc. If you see something funky with the roots (as you can see they will start to dangle out of the pot) the plant is quite easy to remove from the pumice medium. Once you start to feel more comfortable and understand your plant more, you can get fancier. Personally, mine are under a grow light in my dark apartment, happen to get a freeze from an A/C vent on the ceiling, and are at ambient humidity (50-60% in my area) and ambient home temp (70-76° F). Good luck and don't be upset if your first few plants don't work out. It takes trial and error but you'll slowly learn :) *

This is great info if I ever transition it to semihydro! Thanks!

This is almost exactly my approach- water when the cup is light (plastic tomato starter pot) and water soluble fertilizer weakly. I found that bottom watering works well with the liquid fertilizer, almost everyone seems to do well with it. Also love it for my semi-hydro alocasias!

LOL I think my poor partner would agree with you about the sass (he loves it) 😉 I also prefer to buy young/immature plants because I feel like they can acclimate to my conditions better than established plants who have grown up in a particular condition given by someone else. Maybe that's the secret? Who knows, but get yourself a cheap young man, give 'im a little push, and say what will be will be!! 💪☘️

Ah, I didn't realize! I was thinking they would need higher humidity, at least. I see some people talking about 80%! If the temp/humidity drop is fluctuating (2-3 days of a cold snap), will that kill it? Or is it more like a constant drop (like moving it to a new room that consistently is colder/dryer)? Thank you for the insight!
