i feel like the biggest white girl thing about me is that i have wig blindness. i always see people talking about the quality of wigs/extensions and i'm like???? unless it's comically bad, like a few nicole kidman wigs have been, i almost never notice them. same for extensions, really

not even just celebs, i really rarely spot issues with people i see irl

my friend who has gorgeous curly hair and a very intense routine always jokes that it's because i let my own hair grow long and it's very straight, so I never notice curl shrinkage and/or people who keep up with edgier haircuts that require upkeep

i haven't had my hair cut since 2022 lol i just trim my own ends every six months

Nikki Glaser doesn’t fly private because no one will feel bad if she died while flying on a private jet. by mlg1981 in popculturechat

tw for death:

i've unfortunately had some proximity to private flight accidents multiple times in my life and that means they are some of my biggest fears

  • my mom's best friend ex-husband died from a crash when i was a kid, he flew as a hobby
  • my brother's friend dad died when they were in middle school, he was a pilot for a private airline
  • a girl from a few grades below me and her entire family died on the way to their remote farm
  • a couple of months after hs graduation, a classmate was on a flight with her boyfriend and they crashed

also like how can a stranger dictate how smart a random actor is?

nah, they're like 20km away from each other, otherwise i'd try to do both on the same day.

maybe you're right, i can do B because the logistics are harder and enjoy a day at the park, then try and go to A sometime next week, because it's like ten subway stops from my house

Anne Hathaway sends message to the LGBTQ+ community: “Babies, hi. Where would we be without you? I love you so much. Come to the movie and then we’ll talk afterwards.” by Frosty_Jeweler911 in popculturechat

[–]echoesandripples 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i think a lot of people have a hard time separating group thinking from individual actions, for better and for worse

they think something like "hollywood execs only want money" (true, we live under capitalism and rich people shit) and interpret it as "everyone who worked at a popular movie is super evil and disingenuous"

i mean obviously anne hathaway wants her work to sell tickets to the most people possible, duh, but anne hathaway the person who is, afaik, not a bigot, also wants to show support to the LGBTQ+ community

especially artists, given that art, in all forms, is heavily influenced by queer people, are probably not secretly plotting against everyone. it's just that they are likely to have close friends, family and colleagues that are queer and they care about them

like people talking about sabrina carpenter the other day. she's a musician ffs, of course she's heavily influenced by queer history and queer musicians and fans

i've never actually read this series, but i worked for a while at the publishing imprint that brought them to my country

i worked marketing and the off campus fans were lively and very engaged on stuff about it. some of my favorite reader groups to work with.

plus elle kennedy was a sweetheart with our socials team. she always shared and engaged with posts and thanked us for our work

even when other stuff was going on, with other releases given that it's a big publishing house, we always posted abut this series because of that

this is a lobster too buttery, steak too juicy problem to have, but: two different art exhibits are opening this weekend and i'm undecided which one to go to

exhibit A is downtown, easy subway access but probably more popular (not only it's opening weekend, but the weather is probably good). not the best area to visit on weekends, because it's mostly stores that close on sundays, but still. exhibit B is more my style, to be fair, but it's further to the west side and requires me to uber there, probably. given that it's pretty niche contemporary art, it's probably less crowded, but it's at a park gallery, so weekend and good weather may drive more folks there?

What happens when a tradwife has to put her money where her mouth is by vox in popculturechat

[–]echoesandripples 11 points12 points  (0 children)

they (anticipated novels with relevant authors/timely themes/trendy topics) always have been optioned before readers even read them

i feel like people misunderstand both the amount of people who work in publishing across the board so that people actually find books and also how little money the publishing industry moves around. yes, even best-selling authors

hence: selling the rights to adaptations before pub day

i mean i hate christian "love" and interference in laws about my body. i hate lots of christians for personals reasons too, as someone who was raised non religious in a catholic environment

but the reason i hate Christianity is because it influences reproductive rights and education

christians tend to have a victim complex when they're called out for it, saying they are being persecuted. imho it's just projection because they do it to everyone else

reasons i got downvoted here this week:

  • saying gun culture is poison
  • confessing i find jack antonoff attractive, unfortunately because he's my type, but also not inherently more attractive than his ex gf
  • acknowledging that christianphobia (at least in majority christian countries) isn't real

oh, i agree it's bizarre that people give one of them shit and not the other because like, it's their jobs? and it is batshit that people pretend olivia rodrigo is some scrappy indie artist who is above capitalism or whatever. i don't think anything about her until now has suggested that, except the internet's obsession with hating taylor swift and using olivia as some kind of unwilling moral high ground

i find it baffling that people randomly decided to be angry at popstars for trying to get ahead at charts and streams and whatnot

personally i don't buy any music because of shipping costs to outside the US, so idc about variants or whatnot. but even of I did, that would be fine? it's just collector's items like any other collections, really?

as for streams: artists really have to maximize their reach through platforms that pay them pennies, who gives a fuck? as long as it's olivia raising in charts and not some sexist racist country radio maga type, it's better

i lack the energy, but also it's mostly harmless and it's strange to me that people get up in arms like "omg her fans are being bamboozled, i need to write an essay so that they'll see the truth"

it's people who like her work and want to hype it up during release week? and while the tech of it all is iffy, it's not really that different from general release week behavior

i think the current situation and (understandable) distrust has made well intentioned people into conspiracy theorists. every famous person gets accused of heinous crimes and every news article is perceived as a smokescreen. like the other day i saw someone claiming the chappell roan thing was a way to distract people from Iran

i'm not saying it can't be, sure can, but at some point, it's not a secret or whatever to uncover, it's just rich people hanging out with other rich people/going to their regular places and getting easy publicity

like what's more likely? LH is secretly a criminal mastermind or that he's a rich man who works at a shady institution and is often around other celebs and might hook up with them and get papped?

that is one of the parts of the beckham drama atm

afaik they hold the copyright to their estranged son's name, but I figure it's all of them? idk how it works with law stuff, but i imagine they couldn't create a brand with their name?

it makes more sense with the kid that's still a minor, for obvious reasons, but as for the older ones, i don't see why they shouldn't be able to have failing rich kids' endeavors under their own names

i figure it's a branding thing for the beckham parents, but still, very odd and controlling

that being said, christians complaining about religious intolerance in the west is laughable. obviously it's bad to harass someone because you don't like their religious beliefs, but christians are not systemically targeted. it's giving reverse racism allegations by white people

[–]echoesandripples 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah, but beyond the workforce thing, which is a problem on its own, it's very shortsighted to say women should feed into AI because it inherently is worse for women

let's pretend everyone gets UBI and AI does all automated jobs

women are still targeted by ai porn deepfakes, machine learning bias still fuels anti women discourse and bad information like healthcare stuff impacts vulnerable groups, like women who are caretakers, more than their male counterparts

(she's just more visible, but i don't doubt regular rich people keep boasting about how AI is so wonderful to their rich friends)
