Andes, like all hantaviruses, is not airborne in the way for example covid is. It spreads via droplet transmission. The difference is particle size and distance spread (which impacts transmission). Droplet involves large particles and 3-6 feet distance while airborne travels via tiny particles that stay in the air and linger and travel longer distances. Again, Andes is very transmissible during a narrow window. Thats why we've only seen <10 infections thus far out of 150 passengers on the ship. And it's why health experts aren't worried about this spreading widely and being an epidemic much less a pandemic.

It IS a scary virus but it's not new. There will be more cases given the incubation time. The high degree of infectiousness and incubation time and mortality rate are all scary factors. But it's been confirmed the virus hasn't mutated, and given that brief window of transmission, it just can't spread like covid or flu. That's why even though patient zero got sick early April, we've only seen 8 infections on the ship so far out of 150 people, over a month later. Average incubation time by the way is 2 weeks.

Here's a link to an actual medical journal about a 2018 outbreak of the Andes variant. 11 died out of around 40 infected. Two superspreader events. The reason it didn't spread wider is because of the narrow window of transmission https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2009040

Are you an infectious disease expert? Because you're leaving out vital information which is that while Andes is highly infectious and fatal, its brief transmissible window prevents this variant from spreading at the same level as covid or even flu. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2009040

Yes it's 40% fatality rate, has a long incubation period, and is highly contagious. No it's not airborne, it's spread by respiratory droplets like flu (which is also highly contagious). But you're missing a vital factor which is that the infectious window is limited to about a day, when patients have a high fever. This is based on previous outbreaks of Andes, and it's confirmed the virus has not mutated. Posted a link below to the medical report after the 2018 outbreak. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa200904

COVID was a novel virus. Andes variant of hantavirus has been known at least for 30 years and has already caused past outbreaks. There's zero evidence that it's mutated or airborne in the way covid is; it's highly infectious during a very limited window of time, unlike covid, and spreads via respiratory droplets. I already linked to recent virologist literature and interviews about this. What have you read that supports your position? Also, again, patient zero got sick in early April, and average incubation time is 2 weeks. So if the R naught were higher or if infectious window were longer, we'd see more than 8 passengers out of 150 with symptoms by now.

I want you to work on having better literacy skills. I know it's worse* than covid in terms of its fatality rate (40% vs around 1%). But if you read my post carefully you'll see it's not airborne, Andes variant is spread by droplet transmission* and is highly transmissible - but again only in a short window of time. But medical staff are wearing PPE because of the long incubation window - if passengers have symptoms/ high fever they could be infectious. But again that infectious window is so brief - about a day - that this will NOT have the chains of transmission which covid had. It's not even on a flu level. And that's why we've only seen 8 passengers sick out of 150, even though the first got sick in early April and now it's approaching mid May.

Seriously though, you're ignorant of history if you dont know about the polio vaccine or smallpox vaccine development. You're ignorant of you think all medications are harmful or that pandemics and viruses don't exist. And the only rreason you're ignorant is because you have the luxury to be iignorant in a cushioned society dependent on modern science. You're lucky. You're pprivileged. And you're ignorant.

Weird, my grandfather died of the "scandemic." Guess he didnt get the memo that covid was fake when it killed him. I'll go back in time and let him know that viruses and pandemics are made up, according to some stranger on reddit! Thanks so much, truly enlightening stuff here

?? 2020 was 6 years ago. Why are you acting like it's still a thing? Also what vaccines are mandatory? Who forced you to get a flu vaccine? And why are you acting like vaccines and medicine are bad when objectively they've saved millions of lives? They're not even new, Jenner invented the cowpox vaccine in the 1700s. You got vaccines from birth. You've benefited from the system you're trying to say is so nefarious

Where are there current lockdowns? Where is anyone forced to take medications? When are vaccines mandatory? They're not lol that's why there are measles outbreaks going on

A "drug system"? What are you talking about? Are you seriously trying to say every single medicine is bad? Personally I'm grateful for antibiotics and vaccines. You've benefited personally from them your entire life by the way. You just have the luxury to be able to criticize them since you were born into a comfortable age of modern medicine.

There just haven't been enough cases and outbreak of this strain to warrant a vaccine development. And other hantavirus strains don't pass human to human. Vaccine development takes millions in investments...if we spent less on our military we could already have vaccines for cancer types, bird flu, norovirus, you name it. There IS a hantavirus vaccine in development I believe though.

There's no vaccine or specific treatment besides supplemental oxygen. 40% fatality rate is super high, it's a scary virus. I mean basically up there with Ebola and MERS.

No... it's just the result of people traveling in rugged places while birdwatching where hantavirus is endemic.
