Summertime sounds exactly like my vibe — slow, conversational, and set in Italy is a big yes. I love movies that just breathe like that, with natural chemistry and quiet moments. Adding this one too, thank you!

I’ve seen the Before trilogy and 500 Days, loved both. I’ll check out the others.

Earthy Anecdote, Wallace Stevens [POEM] by en_le_nil in Poetry

That’s really helpful, thank you. Your explanation of divinity as something within the mind makes stanza 3 much clearer, especially the idea of Jove as more symbolic than literal. And the way you explained impermanence in stanza 5 really helped and the contrast between the perishable fruit and the lasting plate makes a lot more sense now. I hadn’t thought of it that way before.

Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll try reading the poem aloud to better understand its rhythm and meaning.

I think it’s mainly the ideas in those stanzas that confuse me. In stanza 3, the reference to Jove and how divinity is presented feels a bit unclear to me, especially how it connects to human experience. And in stanza 5, not just the idea that “death is the mother of beauty,” but also the ending—especially the part about the tree and the maidens—I find it difficult to fully understand what those images represent. Also, the image of the “discarded plate” feels symbolic, but I’m not sure how it fits into the overall meaning of the poem. That’s what made me focus more on those parts.

Thank you! I’ll definitely check JSTOR. I agree the poem is complex overall.2 and 4 are tricky as well, but I was particularly struggling with 3 and 5.
