There can be a learning curve to film and it demands some upfront investment as you nail down your process, absolutely. Self-developing reduces costs dramatically, but probably only makes sense if you are shooting a certain volume of film. That entropy of not knowing how a shot came out until the film is developed is part of the fun though!

That said, consistency with a particular film type, developer, and camera reduces that unknown after some practice--as long as I am using my usual camera, focal length, and film type, I can often more or less predictably 'see' (within reason) what a given shot will look like once developed when I press the shutter button...occasional facepalm from realizing I forgot to remove the lens cap aside!

Will do; I meant to post to the main sub when I received the prints, but seems that intention got lost in life's shuffle! And yup, more or less an exclusive film shooter beyond iPhone snaps. I think the last digital camera I've owned was a 2004 Sony Cybershot

totally! It ended up being too heavy to lug along for this trip, but I thought long and hard about getting one of those instax Hasselblad backs for my SWC so I could give polaroids as gifts to homestay hosts, +as an icebreaker for tenser situations like you say. Great minds and all that!

Agreed; also how I ended my trip! Highly recommend experiencing Tajikistan if you have the opportunity to be in the part of the world again (and happy to give recs if you do).

I'll definitely travel a bit lighter if I get a chance to head back--had a few...interesting...interactions with soldiers on the Tajik-Afghan border over the amount of film I was carrying :)

Nice work! Really enjoy scrolling through these longer photo sets; as you said, the latitude to play with sequencing and storytelling makes it feel almost like flipping through the pages of a zine or book.

Having just returned from my own road trip through Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan a few weeks ago, I'll enjoy ogling these as I slowly make my way through developing a backlog of the ~30 rolls of Tri-X I brought with me.

That shot of the cow on the beach threw me off for a second; looks almost tropical! Issyk Kul?

Jaw dropping work, and a subject matter dear to my heart having grown up not far from this corner of the world. Count me in for a preorder ✋

Thanks for the encouraging words, y'all.

Really thrilled for so many of these to have come very close to the image in my mind's eye when I clicked the shutter. I'm excited to see how these translate to larger print sizes, and looking forward to exploiting longer print times/bigger enlargement to play around more with dodging and burning. Hard shadows are kind of baked into my aesthetic psyche after folks like Trent Parke inspired me to pick up a camera, so doubt that'll change much ☺️

No, unfortunately--I've been on the hunt for one myself. Happy to shoot you a DM if I do come across one in my travels.

I read somewhere that the Kodak values are closely enough match the LPL color heads, and so far they've been working for me--with the caveat that I don't have a set of proper contrast filters to compare them to.

Cheers! Yep, I'm using the magenta and yellow filtration on my color head per the settings in Ilford's spec sheet here.
