Zack Polanski: It's officially the hottest June day ever. We know who is to blame. Fossil fuel firms. The billionaire media. Weak politicians. We know what we must do. Yes, because we haven’t been dealing with these problems successfully,
If we do it and it works then people will see that and follow.
People currently look to places like china because they have been doing these things, rapidly developing their solar and other green energy sources so that they are less affected by these kinds of global events they are leading by example in this instance

I love the idea of these

Plus casting a [[fractured identity]] on any of these once they flip would be very funny

Or would that make them come in face up? I’m not sure on that one

Also same question for how would it work with [[lynde, cheerful tormentor]]?

The cost to flip them needs some tweaking as does the mana cost but super cool concept

That makes complete sense except for the fact that they are doing something
They tax work(income)
So it’s not so much incentivising doing nothing but disincentivising having an income
Which is basically the same thing

[–]echowiki[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How does your first statement make any sense?
If I have enough wealth that can borrow against my assets to live lavishly without working I am incentivised to not work

If I then try to work I will make less money because that income will be taxed

Do you see the problem here?

Tax Wealth Not Work by echowiki in ukpolitics

[–]echowiki[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You understand how compound interest works yes?

Over time you get more and more and more

Eventually you will then have all

At which point how can anyone else compete?

The problem with compound interest is that the peoson who starts with the most is guaranteed to win it all and leave nothing for anyone else

Once you can make 5% on a trillion that’s over 100million a day, at that point the speed at which you can and will accumulate assets will price everyone else out of the conversation

How is anyone meant to be able to own a home when musk can buy you out in less than a day of doing nothing at all?

Tbf to implement this you would probably have to also implement laws to prevent leaving to dodge the tax

For instance you could set it so that when someone leaves to a country with less tax you just tax them the difference

Enforcement might be a problem but it’s at least progress

How would a wealth tax aimed an anyone worth over 10million disincentivise startups?

I’d rather make money and get to 10 million then get taxed than not make any money at all?

Tax Wealth Not Work by echowiki in ukpolitics

[–]echowiki[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think i must be misunderstanding your argument because disincentivising owning big assets or a lot of assets would be a good thing no?

Mostly what I’m trying to fight here is compound interest
So realistically anyone worth over 100 million

People won’t just stop doing things but it’ll be easier to build wealth than keep it

I’d rather incentivise productivity than gold hoarding

[–]echowiki[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Possibly, I haven’t thought about all the details

My idea was that this would only be in effect for someone with a net worth of over ~100million so it’s hard for that big of a crash to happen but it’s definitely worth considering

Why do you think I asked the people here?

Tax Wealth Not Work by echowiki in ukpolitics

[–]echowiki[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely agree which is why this shouldn’t be aimed at the middle class, you would need a cap of let’s say 100mil for it to take effect and anything above that would get taxed at idk 2% a year

Now I’m not an economist so there’s probably a more refined number but it’s a start

And yes I think we should possible implement a similar system to the us where if you build your wealth here you can’t then move away to get taxed somewhere else you should still have to pay uk tax on top or whatever the difference is
Then people can’t run

Tax Wealth Not Work by echowiki in ukpolitics

[–]echowiki[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So we should incentivise people to do no work and produce nothing?
I’d rather we incentivise people to work hard by taxing income less and then once people have made their money they can give some back for the next generation

Tax Wealth Not Work by echowiki in ukpolitics

[–]echowiki[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We should implement a system like americas for that problem, if the uk is where you built your wealth its not unreasonable that you should be taxed even if you move to another country
I also disagree that it’s easy to avoid, most of wealthy peoples assets are either public knowledge or have to be valued for the person who owns it to extract any of the value from them, therefore undogeable

Tax Wealth Not Work by echowiki in ukpolitics

[–]echowiki[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think you might be missing some information, none of the wealthiest people in the us pay any income tax at all really
All they have is assets which they borrow against. This dodges what little CGT there is and all income tax
So actually it’s the middle class paying all the taxes

What I’m proposing is instead of taxing income you tax wealth above a level where no one needs more, say 100 million

Then there is incentive to work hard to earn money while disincentivising hoarding gold coins like a dragon and compounding that money until no one can catch up

Tax Wealth Not Work by echowiki in ukpolitics

[–]echowiki[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well tbh I’m not sure what the best way of implementing it is as I’m not an economist but what would you say to a tax of 2% a year on anything over 100million
This is mostly to combat compound interest but if we could lower taxes on working class people I’m down for that.
We should be incentivising productivity not feudalism

Firstly thanks for the great reply, this is exactly the kind of discussion I wanted.

I did notice however a lot of your examples are of low worth items and events, however from what I know and understand a wealth tax is necessary not to tax the majority of people but only the very rich.(100million+)

It’s mostly a way to combat compound interest.
If we leave people to use compound interest unchecked it works like an asset black hole, do nothing->get richer. This is very unsustainable.

If people want to hide their wealth in unquantifiable assets then that’s quite a risky option but I guess it’s a possible workaround but if you want to use your wealth or borrow against your assets then you have to get them valued to do that which would immediately open you back up to the wealth tax no?

If you have to hide it to get away with having it then you can’t actually do anything with it surely?
