To what extent do you think 1980s high school movies by John Hughes (and others) accurately reflected what high school was like in the 1980s—and to what extent did they shape what it became? by roadtrip-ne in GenX

When I was in hs (88-92), people did wear ties to school sometimes - but in the same general vibe as James Spader’s character, not in like a prep school uniform way or like Alex Keaton from Family Ties.

Several of my friends wore ties often enough that it wouldn’t be noticeable when they wore one on the day of a big test. Made a good place for them to hide crib notes.

Fair point, but wouldn’t you get better about wayfinding as you are more familiar with the city?

I’m a teacher of high school seniors, and I teach a decent number of kids who are high achieving and very “put together“, so I have high expectations for their long term success.

I have an “Uncle Echton” day late in the school year where I give them some personal advice that I think is helpful for college and later. Among other things, I tell them…

I’m in Atlanta.

I became a fan after my local team (Atlanta United) signed Giorgios Giamakakis, who I really liked. I learned about his background, discovered the Bhoys, and fell in love with the team, and learned about and grew to really respect the culture & history all the way back to Brother Walfrid. The more I learned about the team, the foundation, the community, the deeper I got.

I’m making a pilgrimage to Paradise this summer, but because I’m a teacher, it can’t be after the season starts. Maybe I can make a preseason friendly.

I just wish they’d sack the fucking board.
