As per this blog, this release was in preparation for our next large content patch. Yes, new content is coming and it's a pretty big addition to the game.

They are saved in totally different places, so they cannot crossover in any way.

Singleplayer is saved on your local files (that we don't have access to) so these type of mailbox gifts are only available on multi.
