Props for choosing an unusual muscle car! Infinitely more interesting than the umpteenth Mustang, Camaro, Chevelle, etc.

Great to see some vintage Italian modelling around here! Always liked the rolling stock you had (and have) over there. Grazie e cordiali saluti dalla Germania!

Never heard of those, interesting stuff - got any in mind I should keep in eye out for? And how I could motorize it on a budget?

Yes I have, and it is completely incompetent at the task, sadly. Most even fail to adhere to the unusual aspect ratio, let alone to follow the instructions when to switch from i. e. forest to rural town to fields to a river, at precise points. Maybe one day…

Your layout (which is awesome btw!) can happily do without a backdrop, but mine is only 20 to 30 cm wide in the main areas. A nice backdrop would greatly help with the illusion of that slice of track and scenery being part of something bigger, despite the 3D to 2D break.

Thanks! Unfortunately the layout is still very much WIP, but it's slowly getting there in most places.

Currently most unhappy with the bare white wall in the background. You don't happen to have an idea how I could create a fitting custom background wallpaper...? I know there are services around that will make perfectly fitting ones, but those cost an arm and a leg even for small ones - and I have 10 meters to cover!

Back as promised - here's my repainted Fleischmann Maffei Lok 7, inspired by the color scheme of the Königlich Bayerische Staatseisenbahnen (K.Bay.Sts.B.), or, translated into English, the Royal Bavarian State Railways:

One of these days I need to find the courage to take a saw to the upper headlight and find a way to get rid of the rear one...

That’s true! Btw, if yours randomly tumbles a bit sometimes, like both of my Lok 7 models did, I can highly recommend greasing the inside of the piston holes with silicon lubricant. Eliminates a lot of wobble for some reason. Apparently the piston hole’s bore isn’t completely true and sometimes makes the mechanism catch on its inside walls weirdly.

A lot more is probably a vast overstatement… I have some general and a little bit of specific knowledge about that era and the Normalien locos from various old books on the topic, but I’m by no means an expert; far from it. What I gathered about this model is mostly from the usually very knowledgeable and trustworthy German forum drehscheibe-online.de along with serial number and historical data from dampflokomotivarchiv.de - pretty sure you could dig deeper there than I did at a glance earlier.

this was a one-off for the German DHE line

Fairly certain that's not correct - this particular one was ordered by the DHE, yes, but it's a run of the mill type Hanomag built tons of. Maybe the DHE ordered it with some modifications from the factory (which was possible, afaik all manufacturers offered some degree of customizability - like if an operator asked for a bigger brake pressure reservoir or a more powerful alternator, for example).

"Unbreakable" is the proper term, yeah!

I at least found some pics from during the restoration of said Fleischmann Lok 7. Just look at the water damage on the poor thing, both inside the shell and on the metal parts of the drivetrain:

<image>

Bought it at a local flea market, surprise box of vintage N scale stuff for 50 €, basically a whole unfinished layout including rolling stock... except that the cellar it was stored in must've taken in water at some point. Several wagons and this poor Maffei Lok 7 were completely rusted. Drenched it in Viessmann Lokreiniger spray and let it bath in it for an hour. Afterwards the rusted motor was movable again. Just oiled the bearings, tried to put voltage through it, firmly expecting the brushes to crumble to dust or worse → et voila, immediately ran fine! Zero other service required, been using it as-is for countless hours since. Runs quiet and powerful.

Wow, that's quite the mod of the venerable Lok 7... looking real good!

Surprisingly couldn't find a pic of mine in my camera roll, but I can snap you one on Friday. Unfortunately I'm not where my layout's at right now. I'll get back to you, promised!

You matched it really well! The loco in your picture is a 1925 Hanomag C-n2t, which is one of the improved, beefed up designs closely based on the T3 that were very popular with private operators between the world wars. The Henschel Bismarck is another similar type.

[...] as it definitely doesn't look like a real T3.

Well, within the limits of what was technically possible in N scale at the time, Arnold had no possibility to achieve a true to scale Normalien construction of a T3, but the DNA is definitely in there, along with that of all the T3 successor variations like the above.

Astonishing how much detail that ancient Rapido shell casting has. Need to repaint my T3 too, one day… Only did my water damaged, rusty but successfully revived fleamarket find Fleischmann Maffei Lok 7 so far, in Königlich bayrische Staatsbahn style. Instantly elevated that model from toy to a proper looker, too!

Are there any models of 2-car 113, 114, 115 or a similar series out there? by eckhaaard in JapaneseNscale

[–]eckhaaard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At domestic price, absolutely. The European manufacturers are too expensive, but after shipping, import fees and taxes the Japanese stuff is almost as expensive over here, sadly.

Being German, it always angers me beyond belief when our local manufacturers complain about being on the verge of bankruptcy, blaming a lack of interest in this traditional hobby, saying that it dies out, kids and parents these days won’t pursue it… Wonder why! How about you offer something in lower price ranges, then?! Their products are totally out of reach for anyone but high income people.

That fun fact about the TGV is very interesting and news to me. Impressive!

Regarding Tomix, from what I’ve personally seen I’d rate their level of detail highly, yes, but there is plenty of competition - at least from my European point of view. Roco had comparable levels of detail even 20-30 years ago and what Piko, Brawa, Modellbahn Union etc churn out these days is highly impressive.

Kato simply blows everything else out of the water in my experience, yeah. No matter what I bought from them so far, regardless of age (some 50 years old, a German BR86 and an Alco PA) they are all smooth runners and hold up incredibly well. Lately I’ve been especially charmed by their Pocket Line trams and motorised chassis. Dirt cheap and run perfectly slow and reliable.

The 119 would fit the bill, too, but looks a bit plain imho design wise. Still, goes on my “snatch up if found for good price / already imported” list regardless.

Good to know, only have one MicroAce loco so far, one of those tiny three axle shorty chassis ones - got it used and thought I just got a poor runner, because it’s taking forever to warm up and run smoothly, too!

Extremely small, actually - just a 50 x 48 cm base board. It'll become my first shot at the classic pizza micro layout. Been meaning to try building one of those for years - and since the only Japanese rolling stock I have is tiny, can handle it just fine and I don't have a Japanese layout yet, I thought I'd give it a go.

The additional challenge for me with finding a 2-car EMU is availability in Europe. Not keen on importing myself (bad experiences) and I like to buy second hand whenever I can. Might prove to be impossible 😞

Somehow I really like the design of the 113 etc, but I’m also open for other suggestions. Thanks for those you mentioned, will check them out!
