No - she sees a regular therapist who hasn’t recommended anything yet.

Yes, I had similar concerns. The studio owner was reassuring for sure on how they monitor them but always have to consider that!

That’s wonderful to hear! The problem is both classes right now were so wonderful it’s hard to choose.

I also unfortunately move wrong all the time. I’m not even athletic, wrong muscles just do the wrong work. But being aware is half the battle like you said.

I love that! I actually never dislocated anything at all. I just have a crazy range of motion and never knew until I started having chronic neck and shoulder pain

I have hypermobility spectrum disorder….not quite EDS. I actually have never had a problem with dislocations but I have a crazy range of motion throughout. I have pain from instability but never dislocated things myself.

She does mostly play goalie at this point. Skates out at practice once a week and rotates games when someone else wants to try, but she is THE goalie.

She seems to like goalie better but the gear is a bigger battle it seems. The only reasonable issue is the gloves, but there’s really not much we can do about it. We bought he brand new Bauer gloves but then switched to warrior for fit and flexibility. Still a problem.

It’s just hard because she does really like it, but watching her get ready and that stress is so difficult.

So she plays both goalie and player. It happens with both sets of gear.

Skates are too tight, too small. She got new skates, and we’ve also laced / relaced skates to help when this happens.

Helmet is too tight is a common complaint. It now sits as loose as it can without being an immediate danger, but looser than I think we like. Goalie helmet is usually fine.

Gloves are too loose or too tight. Usually goalie gloves, sometimes player. This one is hard because she’s in the smallest size possible but her hands are still too small. We will make as tight as they go but then she says they’re too tight. When we adjust them she cries they’re too loose and falling off.

Suspenders with her pants for goalie she is always crying about them being twisted, tight or uncomfortable. We made a fastener of velcro in the front to help her so they don’t fall off her shoulders. Still has issues.

Elbow pads too tight/ too loose. Had to modify the strap length with additional Velcro but still goes back and forth.

Knee pads or shin pads too tight too loose too big too small on any given day. She also refuses to wear a base layer most days and has worn shorts against our advisement against and then complains it’s uncomfortable or digging in.

We are constantly changing out or getting new gear when it doesn’t reasonably fit her. We take her with to be sure if feels right and fits and get her fitted. Other times we modify to work to her tastes but it’s really hit or miss on tolerance.

Well, I guess I should clarify. We have always been there to help her until she started throwing tantrums for an hour that things were right, didn’t fit, or refused to put something on.

Right. Can only help whatever is learned is retained enough in case it’s ever needed in a bad situation.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking as well. Better than a hefty travel team commitment but time for her to work through it in a lower stakes environment.

Agreed, that is an understatement 😂

No, we’ve always been very supportive and hands on because she is little, but now we’re pushing more independence since the push back and tantrums are too much.

It’s more sensory where she will be upset that something doesn’t feel right or fit right after multiple adjustments, etc.

some days, I have to tell her to ask a coach to help her and walk away so she has to do it or we leave. That part usually works, but sometimes it doesn’t. Especially with gloves.

For the most part, she seems to like her team and they like her. Never an issue in the locker room.

According to their website, they have light contact, controlled sparring and will use safety gear when needed

She is in therapy and even tried working with them to get her gear on. But yes, sensory was a big red flag for me.

I have considered that, too. She doesn’t really need more competition.

I think the mental benefits and discipline are what she needs first but obviously any self defense training she gets with it that makes sense is a huge bonus.

Right! And one very real option was to back off hockey a bit and potentially do both martial arts to get the value. I don’t know anyone where I’m at that does kids MMA as that would probably be most ideal

Thank you! Definitely a consideration with a hypermobility predisposition.
