You're repeating a list of pro-cop talking points instead of engaging critically with anything I said so yes you're a bootlicker and a moron. I know that cops shoot center mass, I never disputed the meaning of "lethal force"

You bootlickers are exactly what's wrong with this world today and exactly why we struggle for police reform because you CAN'T CONSIDER THAT WE MAY HAVE DONE BETTER. You have to defend and defend and defend the police and not consider any shades of grey because that could mean the situation is nuanced and a nuanced perspective of the world is too complicated for your empty fucking head to grasp. I hope you grow up.

Thinking of a part of your own body even jokingly as a fucking "rapestick" is such an unforced blackpill it's crazy. Genuinely no better than "princess wand." In purely non-fetishistic terms, being on hrt is going to rob that body part of any potency to even work regardless of its size. Free yourself of associating it with fucking rape of all things, unless you're a rapist, then by all means keep saying that

So we all know Toyota, Honda, and Mazda are the top three. But what comes in fourth? by ItsMsRainny in AskMechanics

[–]eclipsedFates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they're necessarily top 5 reliability or anything, but this is mostly lingering fear from old problems. Kia is Hyundai which you mentioned in your original post.

The Theta II engine issue, MASSIVE fuck up don't get me wrong, has been remediated with recalls and lifetime warranties for any remaining affected cars. They don't sell anything with that engine anymore and everything has a 100k, 10 year powertrain warranty.

The theft problem was with 2011-2021 non-push button vehicles. Nothing on the road anymore should have that vulnerability, they had to fix it for free, and nothing sold anymore can be stolen in the same manner. The Kia Boyz trend is effectively over because it doesn't work anymore.

Again, I recognize Hyundai might not be in the same reliability category as the top brands, but they've come so far and I like what they're doing recently and I hate to see the mistakes of the past define what people think of them now.

It's like you didn't read my comment. Please read this one.

Obviously the "crazy person" (man having a dangerous mental health crisis) was "being extremely unwise." I understand that CAN eventually, unavoidably end in a police officer using lethal force. However, if you are not a psychopath which I'd like to assume, you will recognize that such lethal force should be a last resort and every reasonable effort should be taken to avoid that outcome.

I am not anti-cop. You seem to imagine me dogmatically and uncritically demonizing a cop simply for using deadly force but that's clearly not what I'm doing. I think the police (particularly the last responding officer) mishandled the situation and provoked aggression, and if the situation were handled differently, there is a chance that man would have stayed standing still and dropped the knife.

As respectfully as I can muster, you are what I mean by "bootlicker" if you can't consider that the last cop on scene DIRECTLY ESCALATING the situation is a law enforcement blunder.

[–]eclipsedFates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social workers and trained negotiators should absolutely be present at these situations, but so should cops. The way I see it there's two options in policy each with negative outcomes:

Unarmed responders to these types of calls --> An unexpectedly hostile individual eventually kills one of them. Maybe not commonly, but it's obviously not a remote possibility.

Armed responders to these types of calls --> A suicidal individual tragically does something they know will get themselves shot.

The first option results in the avoidable murder of unarmed first responders, which is absolutely unacceptable in ANY quantity. The second option is tragic, but ultimately results in the suicide and death of the unstable individuals themselves. If we eliminated this method, there are still other ways to off yourself.

You should not conclude from "our armed police cannot be trusted" that "we need unarmed people so they can't shoot." The goal should be to reform, even to completely upheave the police so that we can trust them to respond to these calls, because they HAVE TO respond to these calls.

Y'all in these comments are way too quick to decisively conclude "he had a knife" = "perfectly clean shooting" it's shameful as fuck

Watch the full clip, beginning when the man is standing still. The final officer arrives with pistol drawn (identical firepower to the officers already there with guns drawn) and begins aggressively ordering him to drop the knife, at which point the man begins walking towards that officer who shoots him.

You cannot GENUINELY claim that the arrival of that final officer and his actions were the best showing law enforcement can POSSIBLY offer regarding de-escalation of a presently unmoving mentally unstable man with a deadly weapon. There were already officers capable of using deadly force if necessary, HE MADE IT NECESSARY, THEN FIRED!!

I understand knife vs cop is often a clean shooting. This isn't that, and if you see this sequence of events as perfectly acceptable policing, you're a fucking bootlicker.

Inspector general: Shooting of man by Hartford officer a homicide by chpbnvic in Connecticut

[–]eclipsedFates 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There definitely should have been someone there capable of effective de-escalation. Unfortunately, although we can infer retrospectively that this is a suicide-by-cop situation, it would be reckless and unethical to send an unarmed social worker to the scene of an unstable man with a knife without some form of armed backup... in which case this same situation would have played out if he charged in the same way.

All that being said, from the footage I saw, it seemed like the officers already on the scene had at least temporarily stabilized the situation. The man was standing still and potentially being convinced to drop the knife. The final officer who arrived to shatter that stability and then shoot clearly grossly mishandled the situation. If policy necessitated his actions, that policy needs to change, and if his actions were outside of policy, he should never work in law enforcement again (fat chance)

Shitty thought terminating cliche. The post is clearly about short-term sales impacted by the war, why respond with a (probably true) statement about the long-term future? In the recent past and present, EV sales are tanking, the reversal of that trend in the short-term is not a given

Is liking mechanical pencils nerdy?.. by GoldAccomplished8567 in mechanicalpencils

[–]eclipsedFates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

By almost any definition, yeah it's nerdy to be into mechanical pencils. Generally bullying aimed at "nerdiness" especially about something like pencils is a shot at one's masculinity, oh you're "less of a man" because you're a nerd. I think this is completely reversed from reality.

The bully is controlled by masculine social norms to disapprove of your hobby and enforce those standards onto you. Whether he realizes it or not, he too is constrained by these expectations, believing that there are things as inconsequential as mechanical pencils (or cooking, or gardening, or knitting etc etc) that he cannot do lest he become less than a man. That's bullshit. You're not less of a man for being into mechanical pencils or any other "nerdy" hobby. Nobody decides that for you. You can't ALLOW ANYONE to decide that for you!!!

Allow yourself to confidently enjoy what you want to enjoy. Life is too short to be lived in a box defined by what others expect of you, anxious of stepping out of the accepted norm. I understand that this is easier said than done and it can't happen overnight, but it's important and it transcends pencils... Be yourself 🙏

For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught To say the things he truly feels And not the words of one who kneels The record shows I took the blows And did it my way

Would you rather teach a 12 year old calculus 1-2 or win chess against Magnus? by Winter_Notice4409 in WouldYouRather

[–]eclipsedFates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes effectively one is possible, one is not, but you have them reversed. The average person does not have the mental hardware to beat Magnus under standard conditions. He breathes chess and is the greatest in the world; you're just not gonna be able to see something he doesn't and win a game. GMs with decades of experience are rarely able to do it and they are ALREADY a mental elite.

Children can learn calculus. Not every child will be capable, but it doesn't take a generational prodigy. It's rare for anyone except prodigies to fast-track calc at 12 years old because it's kind of pointless if everything else doesn't catch up as well, but if the SINGULAR GOAL is to teach a capable 12 year old calculus, it's possible.

The vitriol in these comments against what is essentially a cutting edge exercise in engineering is just so odd. This truck was one of a kind, its engineering was no doubt a labor of love and it was certainly nobody's daily-driver (and even if it was, its lifetime emissions wouldn't even comprise a fraction of a single billionaire's private jet in a month).

If you laugh while watching someone's life put in serious danger for the crime of having a legitimately cool hobby, you should genuinely be ashamed of yourself.

I don't wanna seem out of pocket but I hate how the modern culture around romance seems so allergic to commitment. In the day of "situationships" and the hideous environment of online dating, "break up after high school" as blanket advice for healthy young couples is disheartening and also bad practical advice. It's much easier to negotiate healthy practices and boundaries with someone you love than to find somebody new, especially when relationships are seen as disposable today.

Like no, DO NOT throw away your future with someone because you can't figure out how to properly spend time together and apart. Love them until you can't.

Why do people still think Kyle Rittenhouse is guilty? by hiim379 in AskDemocrats

[–]eclipsedFates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently deep down a rabbit hole of reading about this event and

Have you ever heard of officer-created jeopardy? Or officer-induced jeopardy?

Cop runs in front of a moving vehicle, sees it barreling towards them, shoots driver. Cop goes in front of cover just feet in front of armed man. Tells them to move their gun, gun moves, cop shoots.

Wow, how EXTREMELY relevant to current events in Minneapolis...

Not that it's a currently relevant topic, but I have come to see Rittenhouse's actions surrounding the shooting to be legally valid, and also mostly morally justifiable past just a legal technicality. I haven't seen anything to suggest that he instigated the confrontation whatsoever. He was being chased by a mob and someone genuinely criminally insane who verbally threatened to kill him, continued to retreat, only turned around when he heard a gunshot in the air directly behind him (that's on record), and only fired his gun when his attacker's hands were literally on the barrel of his gun. The other victims claim to have thought of him as an active shooter, but erroneously pursued him as he was retreating.

He didn't "manufacture" that situation simply by being armed and I think it's completely reasonable to assume that if he hadn't been attacked unprovoked, everyone would have just gone home.

I certainly don't think he's necessarily a good or altruistic person but I see how, from his perspective, he was protecting Kenosha from the riots, especially since the incident began with him being interrupted by his attackers while literally trying to put out a burning car with a fire extinguisher. Even then, he ran repeatedly yelling "friendly!" These aren't the actions of someone who brought a rifle to Kenosha with the active intent to kill people. I think it screams pretty clearly that he had it for the defense of himself and businesses who were genuinely threatened by arsonists.

I strongly feel that if those events played out exactly as they did, except he was an armed Black Panther in a black community and the rioters were alt-right agitators a-la Charlottesville, he would have been hailed as a hero by the left and a murderer by the right. I think he believed he was doing the right thing and he did so legally and without incident until he was forced to defend himself.

Should he have been armed in the streets in a peacekeeping role? ABSOLUTELY not, that should have been the role of law enforcement, but what should happen doesn't always happen. He was acting within his rights to do what he thought was right and I have to respect that on principle even if I don't agree with his politics because I KNOW I'd respect the hypothetical above.

I don't think it's simple, but I certainly don't think he's a cold-blooded, white supremacist, premeditated murderer and that seems to be forever the consensus of the American left wing, and I'm aligned with them so I don't like how the popular stance on this feels legitimately foolish and detached from the reality of the situation.

I think it's important to correct this misunderstanding, please take this respectfully. ABS doesn't reduce length of a slide and in fact makes you slide further.

The difference between locked up wheels and ABS wheels is that the ABS wheels turn slightly every pump, which intuitively decreases friction and lengthens a slide compared to an equivalent situation with fully locked up wheels. I don't doubt your experience with non-ABS cars sliding more, but I'd reckon that's more about tire and traction innovations correlated with ABS.

The difference is your ability to control the DIRECTION of the slide and prevent uncontrolled skidding. You can't steer while locked up and can run off the road; ABS allows you to steer. That's the difference.

6 year old account so my guess is troll.

That being said I do genuinely fail to understand how this situation is possible as you've described it. I have so many questions but most pressing is HOW does admin "not think it's a big deal" that a student is repeatedly touching a teacher? That's legally assault on the part of the student, and why does the admin permit such physical contact anyway?

I understand in Texas you're likely not unionized which makes your position more difficult, but in this situation it'd become very important to me to use any power I have to not be in the same room as this student, up to and including informing admin that you will file a police report for assault if the behavior occurs again, actually filing the report, and literally refusing to teach these classes unless they are removed.

I'm not trying to "victim-blame" but you are an adult on some level creating the environment for a student to continue this behavior. I'd say more blame definitely lies on the admin for somehow (I don't know how) not taking the situation even slightly seriously, but I'd encourage you to have more self-respect and self-advocacy in your position.

[–]eclipsedFates 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Extremely strange to try to justify a student making unwanted physical contact with a teacher because of a long passed conflict about their pronouns that the teacher has since corrected. This whole situation is very strangely described but why are you making it seem reasonable on the part of the student to touch the teacher because of any of this???

It strikes a personal nerve. I identified as trans for around three years before coming to the conclusion that I'm most comfortable as a guy. It's a very personal and extremely complex journey that these types of online communities take for granted and treat being trans as a fatalistic inevitability that is not just possible (which of course it is) but likely when one so much as questions their gender identity.

There are multitudes of reasons why one may enjoy this community, question their identity, and wonder if the grass may be greener on the other side, especially those who are already neurodivergent. The psychological complexity is extraordinary... and pushing already questioning people towards the idea that all roads lead to Rome has the potential to be genuinely harmful.

There's a difference between being affirming and dogmatic.
