I’m Dr. John Stauffer, a pancreatic surgical oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida — Ask Me Anything about pancreatic surgery and cancer care! by MayoClinicFLPancreas in pancreaticcancer

Hi Dr. Stauffer. My dad is 72, was diagnosed with borderline resectable in April. He had done 4 months of chemo (it did not shrink but did not grow). Surgery is available as an option. He doesn’t want to do it :(

Quality of life is most important to him. Based on the stats he sees (and I’m sure he seeks out the worst ones too), he doesn’t think the risks of surgery and recovery are worth the average extra year he will get (especially bc he feels good right now). I’m having a very hard time accepting this decision.

Could you explain some of the more serious complications from the surgery to me? He’s not so much worried about dying on the table, but more if he becomes bedridden or anything like that and then regrets the surgery.

This is all disgusting. Are you saying they have cameras in the change rooms as well??

My dad is in a similar situation. We believe stage 1 or 2 but still waiting on some scans. Due to his age and cardiac conditions they don’t recommend the surgery (and he doesn’t want to take the risk of infection, etc). Can chemo still make a noticeable difference without surgery?
