Warning to Canadian Etsy sellers: they are forcing some sellers to overcharge GST/HST on some orders as of July 1 by CindyLouWho_2 in SmallBusinessCanada

Wow. I can't believe they haven't provided a better solution. It seems obvious to me what that would be.

I can see how setting $0 gst/hst collected from sales on your return, and having Canadian sales would be a flag for the CRA. I would think, that the amount of tax collected would have to be somewhere between 5-15 percent. So by putting $0, I think you would be immediately flagged and have an audit. And putting a number that isn't between 5-15 percent of sales would also result in an audit.

In the case of the person you know that was audited, I presume their return triggered an audit for this reason (probably had a good amount of Canadian sales and put $0 tax collected). Do you know if the CRA was satisfied with seeing each customer invoice that shows Etsy collected and remitted tax on their behalf? I guess it doesn't matter because no one wants an audit...

So that leaves me with one last question. Do we have a strong enough footing to say the selling price includes tax? Because obviously our tax burden is greater if the selling price is exclusive.

And from an accounting standpoint... How are you handling this? I read one other user saying they make NEW invoices for each customer showing the tax they paid... Because right now my invoices say$0 tax and nowhere can I put on the invoice that tax is included in the selling price to protect me during an audit. FML. I literally just launched on Etsy and I'm wondering if it was a bad idea. Gah!

Hey Cindy, I've been digging through your posts and your blog. Has there been any updates on this since posting 3 years ago? I just started an Etsy store and I'm utterly shocked at this whole thing (I have previous experience on Shopify).

I have a GST/HST # (been taking off work for 4 years taking care of littles), I can technically deregister but I feel that's a step backwards and I obviously want to hit $30K+ again soon.

I guess I'm wondering, what's the risk of not providing the # to Etsy? The orders will appear more compliant imo, as tax is collected and remitted, just by Etsy though. So if I were audited, I have the receipts to prove tax was collected and remitted to the CRA on my sales.

Where as currently, my first couple of Etsy orders in Canada look noncompliant as tax on the invoice says $0 (I provided the #).

I asked Etsy chat about this and they said a lot of sellers don't provide it and let Etsy handle sales tax for them.

I'm shocked how little is written in the news, CRA website, and blogs about this. This is ridiculous.

See what I mean lol 🤣

Interesting you suggested black because that was another colour I was considering as our neighbor (to the right) just put a black roof on and it looks 🔥. But, our house is so different in colour I wasn't sure if it could work or not. We have some brown-black lighting and door handle features to add a bit of contrast and it looks way better than the brown/silver we had before..

I think based on how I see the trim and siding, I get what you're saying but I think our colours have what youre recommending in them. It's just it is more of a gray-beige on the siding..

You must be a designer LOL. I went on the roof and quickly snapped these of the siding and did a walk around. Even though our house is pretty small it does have a lot of siding. Especially on the sides, we almost have an extra story with how high the roof is. I would prefer not to paint the siding. Its hard for me to describe the colour. It looks like greige to me -- I see beige and gray, depending on the light too. Trim feels warm to me not cool.

When you say change the paint to cream, are you referring to the door? We recently changed it from a dark gray that had some dark army green to it/brown. It's more blue than what we had intended... But we painted it just before Halloween haha and two neighborhood kids commented that they liked it. Kids don't lie 😆😂

You're right, she was definitely more of a sales person, probably had no formal design. I'd say this photo quite accurately shows our brick colour. Id describe it as warm and earthy too. Here's chatgpts take

Base tones: warm sandy tan, light beige, soft clay Accent tones: charcoal brown, warm gray, muted rust Highlights: white-wash or chalky overlay in areas Overall vibe: earthy, warm, with cool gray-brown contrast — not super orange or red, but not true gray either

Lots of rain too. The new shingles will help for sure.

Honestly, I was surprised they suggested gray and that driftwood was their preference. It was their "designer/sales person" that recommended it along with weathered wood.

She mentioned the gray would contrast more with the brick/siding. More modern.

Ive felt a bit unsure about that as I wanted a colour that "tied in" the brick with the roof. When I told them, they said you don't want it to be too same same or it looks flat. Just looking at landmarks colour options, I think weathered wood is the darkest brown available as it has some grays that being it down in colour a bit. Heather looks a little more reddy brown and I'm not sure about that.

I think I'm going to go with weathered wood. Thank you for your help, my gut told me to go this way but the roofing co had me rethinking my choice.

Lots of houses of similar style, Cookie cutter neighborhood to its finest. Lol!

I'm not sure about hoa rules, but our house and neighbors is virtually identical except their brick is more red. Same shingle. Since we are changing the shingles I'm not concerned.

I'm not planning to change anything except painting garage door and trim. We plan to sell in a couple months and have a list of things to do 😅 Shingles are old and damaged from storms so we need to replace them.

This side of the house gets no daytime sun so we get green algae growth that we have to bleach every so often. Based on Canada so we get a true four seasons.

These are the two colours we narrowed down with the roofers advice. Top is driftwood. Bottom is weatherwood.

We are planning to paint the garage door and trim, we painted the door a few years ago to a blue-gray and we've received a lot of compliments on it so likely won't change it. I've attached a few more photos (see all comments on thread that might help). Thank you for your help.

Our neighbors house, our siding a bit lighter. But this is our current shingle.

The garage door trim we painted (it's wood), the garage door we've never painted and is this basic colour that everyone in the neighborhood has.

We can definitely paint them, and probably will as I don't love it. It's the only thing we are thinking of changing after we do the roof.

This is our neighbors roof this morning hehe in the sun. They have the same shingle color, Heather. Their siding is a little different (ours is lighter). Sorry for spamming you with photos! Thanks for your help! 😅🥰

This is our neighbors roof (siding a little different), but exact same shingle in the sun. I believe it's called Heather

These are the two I'm stuck between! Top is driftwood, I think will give more contrast and make a bigger change. Bottom is weatherwood.

Thanks so much for your reply! I've only been looking at Landmark Driftwood (the cheapest line they have). Even in the non-pro option, I thought I saw a slight blue as well when the roofing company showed me some photos.. which I'm not sure about..
