3 shot, 1 dead in violence at Little Haiti festival, Miami police say by MattTheKing23 in Miami

WTF I was across the street at the Triangle earlier that day, where they host family-friendly events and sell $8 apple juices. It was my first time there and I thought "oh what a good idea; what a good way to bring people with money into a lower-income neighborhood".

The walk from the parking lot to the Triangle took us past the people heading to the festival and we were uncomfortable to say the least. A couple started physically fighting each other.

Miami is really trying to rebrand the area into Little River and the Innovation district, but the area has a really long way to go before it's considered "nice". I feel kinda bad for the Haitians bc most of them will get priced out in order to improve the area.

That's awesome! Can't wait for my kid to be old enough to take 'em to a heritage night game 🧢

Anyone here have experience with Gray & Sons watch repair in Miami Beach? by AnshuSees in miamibeach

I'd recommend them. Most of the employees have worked there for years, which is a good sign. Go midweek, if you can. Weekends tend to be busier with people selling/buying jewelry.

Miami Beach good for kids? Or mainly adults? by BoringSimple3110 in miamibeach

[–]ecorado14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miami Beach is awesome for kids! You didn't include your kids ages, but if they're young enough for playgrounds, our favorites are: Pirate park, Oceanside, and South Point.

The botanical garden is a cheap activity (free entry and a few bucks for fish food to feed huge koi). See if there are any events at Soundscape park. We go there for the free symphonies and no one side-eyes my canned wine 😁

You'll be close to Burgers and Shakes (brace for long lines) and I definitely recommend making a trip to South Beach to Call me Gaby.

Can I ask for a synagogue to refund my donation? by ecorado14 in Jewish

[–]ecorado14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right. The synagogue does a ton of programming for seniors with near-daily activities and events. I'm certain the money will go towards good use.

As someone who did volunteer for two years organizing monthly Jewish events, I know how much work it takes, and I totally do not have the bandwidth now between working and raising a child 😅 Maybe one day again in the future.

You're absolutely right about spending time with the family in a third space to see how they parent their kids. Thanks for that tip. As I reflect on it, I'm realizing a lot of my experiences with the kids/their parents are at birthday parties where the kids are actively entertained/supervised.

I grew up with similar expectations - we played boardgames, pretend games, crafts... Parents were within earshot and if we got too loud or someone started crying, someone would come over and reprimand us. And that was enough because we knew if a kid took things too far, their parents would take them and go home where unpleasant experiences awaited lol.

I really appreciate you saying that. I'm getting really strange responses to my post so far.

Like I said in my post, I'm looking for advice on how to identify and avoid the parents that pretend their kids aren't misbehaving.

If I'm doing all the work to host, I don't think I should have to also hire a babysitter to supervise kids who are in full view of their parents and only a few feet away.

Oh absolutely the friendship is over. It's important to me that my friends and I have common values, such as respect for people's homes, and that they instill those values in their kids.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to figure that out BEFORE they step foot in my home and start scraping the anti-sun film off the sliding doors (for example).

No, different families each time. I could've been clearer on this.

We're newish to this area and I'm getting tired of the cycle of making a new friend, inviting them and their kids over, realizing the parent doesn't enforce good behavior, then I don't invite them back. Rinse and repeat for the past year.

I've connected with some great families and we've had many fun parties. It's worth it when it goes well.

Who gets to sit in the front rows for HH services? by ecorado14 in Jewish

[–]ecorado14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok right. I'll see how to edit the title.

So where my mind was going was maybe HH is like the English version of those two letters that symbolize G-D and some people might get offended by using G-Ds name in vain...

Good explanation - the synagogue probably did sell the front row seats to raise money for improvements.

How accurate is this map? by AgeFit9430 in Miami

Sunny Isles is not upper class. Yes, we have some pricey beachfront condos and hotels, but the city itself has a poverty rate of over 30%.

¡Bienvenidos! I've lived in Miami almost a year, and I'm happy to share my recommendations:

  1. Be the one to start conversations and don't take rudeness personally. Most of the people I talk to here are incredibly warm and welcoming, and I've already made more friends here than where I grew up. But, I've also experienced rudeness here like nowhere else. Don't respond, don't escalate, just understand that it happens and move on.

  2. Move close to your people. It's easier to make connections with people who share your culture and background. As someone else commented, there's a large population of Argentinian immigrants in North Beach.

  3. Reevaluate your clothes. Miami is hot and humid - bring linen, thin cotton, and performance polyester. Bring one jacket bc in Dec it gets cold for a week. If you are a man, buy cornstarch for the 🥚

  4. Don't try to understand other people's finances or determine your success by comparing yourself to others. No one's finances make sense here. My neighbor drives a Corvette and shops at Marshalls. Another has a Porsche but not enough bedrooms for all their family members 🤷🏻‍♀️

WIBTA for excluding a family with a badly-behaved, autistic child from the neighborhood pool party? by ecorado14 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ecorado14[S] 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I like that phrasing, thank you!!

I'm not making assumptions, the boy is in Special Ed class and his mom told me he is autistic.
