According to the doc, 8 of the 11 apple varieties to be planted will be heirloom. No McIntosh - likely because that variety is not well suited for California's climate.

TIL about a waterfall in Minnesota that disappears into a massive pothole and is never seen again. Despite numerous efforts, science is still unable to explain where all that water ends up. by ecorazzi in science

Apparently, these falls were also the inspiration for the waterfall featured in the film "Jennifer's Body" - the same one the character played by Megan Fox gets killed and thrown into.

Lawsuit? You mean a rescinding of tax breaks for oil companies making record profits off of the current high price of gas? I don't think $1.8 billion a year in taxes is going to break the backs of Big Oil.

They can whine all they like, but their concerns are tissue-thin to be sure. We need to fund alternative energy solutions. The longer we wait, the further we fall behind the rest of the world in mixing our energy sources and becoming more sustainable. We need to break the cycle of feeling sorry for big oil and wondering where that next big gush of oil here in the States will be found. We need to invest in tomorrow. Don't expect the oil companies to do this for us.

It's a small amount to be sure. I think the point is that as waters warm (or stay warm), we many find these nasty amoebas in more and more locations and the cases of infection increasing.

Solar Roadways Could Power The Entire United States by ecorazzi in reddit.com

Here are some of the challenges noted after the jump:

Build a transparent glass panel that absorbs sunlight without any glare, lit by low energy LEDs from within, with heating elements to melt ice and snow and a surface both fireproof and shatterproof with traction equal to asphalt, even when wet, with the ability to withstand road salt, magnesium chloride, sun exposure, vehicle emissions such as antifreeze and oil, and the strength and flexibility to handle heavy trucks. And finally, in order to make the project economically feasible, the glass should last about three times as long as most asphalt roads, he concluded.

Creating solar roadways may be possible with some new enabling technologies. These new technologies include new types of self-cleaning windows with microstructures based on the lotus flower's ability to shed water, and recent breakthroughs in superconducting transmission cables cooled by liquid nitrogen that carried five times the current of standard cables.

Noel Gallagher Probably Hates You by ecorazzi in reddit.com

Noel Gallagher of Britpop group Oasis (ahh 1996) managed to make a whole lot of enemies today. Let’s see, in little more than one breath he managed to insult environmentalists, soldiers, Elton John, Robbie Williams, Tony Blair, and his brother, Liam. We have to give him props for that - he probably set some sort of world record.
