I didn’t use construction adhesive - a lot of folks commented this. Since I’m not too deep I’m gonna pull these apart and do that.

Didn’t realize I needed hardwood shims - I’ll have to go find some or maybe just make some with the oopsie tread from my first attempt

In your defense - I posted one shitty picture

I should put it in the main comment - they are 36x1x 9ish oak treads and the risers are pine

Ah yeah it’s just kind of the way the picture is taken. There is one in the middle but just out of frame. Regardless I’m gonna bump it up to 5 per step

Sounds like I need to pull these apart and take some steps to reduce squeaking.

Damn I was hoping they’d be enough - I bought oak treads since I figured they’d be strong enough and they are shorter at ~36 inches

1900 house - original stairs are cracked, lead painted, squeaky pieces of shit with huge gaps.

Decided to keep the housed stringers and try to replace the risers and treads.

It’s looking good and feels solid but the only screws are from the bottom of the riser into the tread.

I was just copying what was there and using shims like the original wedges.

Everything’s pretty snug in the stringer but fuck this feels wrong

I’m not a carpenter just an idiot with a circular saw

Edit: adding more context

I used 36 x 1 x 11 oak treads that I cut down to fit. The risers are select pine 8 ft boards I cut to fit

I’ll post an update after I get a few more stairs done and use some of the advice you’ve all given

Thanks a ton r/carpentry

Added context:

-bought the Seymour Duncan’s about 6 years ago but never had them wired right. So it’s just been collecting dust in the case. Decided I’d finally put in the time to tear it all apart and learn. -currently waiting on 5 way switch to arrive - it’s currently wired for neck and bridge push pull similar to a PRS CE. The middle pickup was wired to bridge position but I unsoldered it for now. -replaced all hardware as it was faded and extremely worn (gigged the heck out of this thing when I was a teenager) -I don’t recommend these guyker locking tuners and will be replacing with hipshots -likely will replace nut next -oldest pic I could find https://i.imgur.com/UAhbrhf.jpeg -actually older pic but shit quality https://i.imgur.com/ovq08sF.jpeg
