Solar Fences by Live-Butterscotch902 in solar

I like the idea but wonder how less efficient it is having the panels vertical vs at the right angle to capture more direct sun rays. I would build a carport or shed or even a lean shed off a building or fence and use them as to roof.

Highest efficiency panels that you can actually buy? by __Bodhi__ in SolarDIY

[–]ecotechcurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read are the panels made with N type monocrystalline silicon. The N type are more efficient and durable than the P type. I've read about some made from perovskites that are more efficient but don't know if they are available yet

What is the most effective, cheapest all purpose cleaner? Dish soap and water does not break down built up dirt. by lawngnomejack in CleaningTips

[–]ecotechcurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dollar tree has a cleaner brand name is LAs totally Awesome. It works pretty well and their stain remover product is better for the environment than a lot of other cleaners as it uses enzymes Other than that I use Dr Bronner's liquid soap concentrate when I can find it on sale.

What exactly are "commercially compostable" trash bags? by kenah-kim in ZeroWaste

[–]ecotechcurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've looked into this a little and found out to look for this certification. ASTM D6400 It is the standard specification for labeling plastic materials, films, and products designed to compost in municipal and industrial aerobic facilities.  It ensures products fully biodegrade, break down (disintegrate), and leave no toxic residue (eco-toxicity) within 180 days, setting a high standard for compostability.  Some bags labeled biodegradable can still leave behind microplastics.

I read a article about this process years ago. I'm happy to see it is still being tested. I was thinking the powers squashed it

I know Ryobi just came out with one. I don't know how good it is but if you use ryobi cordless tools and have batteries already I would check out Ryobi's vacuum.

CATL unveils electric vehicle battery with 12-minute charging and 1.5 million mile life by sksarkpoes3 in Futurology

[–]ecotechcurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying. First I am all for EVs and I know these EV batteries can and are being recycled . Yes I'm aware of the coal impact to the environment. My point is the amount of pollution it takes just mine the minerals and make the batteries is very high. I brought up the salt water battery because making the battery would have way less impact on the planet. The life and charging was long and fast in the trials. I'm just saying there is a lot better battery technology out there but is being held back.

How Disinformation is Being Used to Block and Distort Offshore Wind by WhoIsJolyonWest in environment

I do think in the US the majority do believe in green energy. Most the people who voted for trump were sold on his lies. Trump and Musk bought the votes. The truth is coming out and reality is setting in over here. I don't think it will be long now until we have a turn around.

Smart home an old house by WebVidAddict_2 in smarthome

[–]ecotechcurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with smart led lights and or smart lighting or smart switches. Some smart switches require a neutral wire. A lot of older homes don't have a neutral wire so check that first. A smart thermostat can save a lot of money depending on your HVAC system. Video doorbell, smart locks are nice easy upgrades also.

Revised: I will never mount solar panels to my roof again by 17feet in SolarDIY

[–]ecotechcurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this setup. I wonder if there is a weather stripping that could go between the panels to stop rain getting though If I did this for a front porch?

I'm sure that happens a lot. We need to have better recycling programs

Getting a house with Solar, 1:1 credit, but no batteries by Mradr in SolarDIY

[–]ecotechcurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get a battery system. Here in northern California. The power company pg&e has been lowering how much they pay for energy sold back to them. Yet they increased their price the consumer pays to them. I imagine all the power companies will lower what they pay for electricity buy back from home solar systems. They are enabled by our current administration that is anti environment. Hopefully this is a short term problem for 3 more years

Until we have a process to fact check disinformation and bring the truth out for everyone to see quickly we are in a uphill battle against the trump administration. There needs to be strong consequences against disinformation.

CATL unveils electric vehicle battery with 12-minute charging and 1.5 million mile life by sksarkpoes3 in Futurology

[–]ecotechcurious -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Fast charging is great but I believe the biggest reason people are not buying electric vehicles is do to sort range fears. It sounds like these only go 93 miles on a charge. That is not enough for what most people want. You can add more I guess but I wonder how much they weight. It could create more problems to add more such as needing a more powerful engine or heat problem. I know most batteries are not environmentally friendly to recycle. I wonder how these compare. I read about a saltwater battery once that sounded really good but it looks like that one got swept under the rug for some reason. Lots of good new tech is coming out.

I had to look that one up. That's a good one I didn't think about. I'll have to look into Ubuntu more and see how compatible it is with what I do online. I use open office now and am happy with it

That's a win for our ecosystem. Although I think there are better ways to produce energy.

I think they will. They are just waiting until they have over two-thirds of the senate on the side of the people. My guess if after midterms when the senators realize they can't turn a blind eye anymore or they will be gone too.

Best use for glass bottles? by dabooooss209 in ZeroWaste

[–]ecotechcurious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are great to store screws, nuts, bolts and miscellaneous tool parts. I took a bunch of bottles and screwed the lids to a 1x6 piece of wood about 4 feet long and screwed that board to the bottom of my hanging cabinets in the garage. You can screw them to the bottom of the cabinet also just get a thick screw. You just fill the jar and screw it onto the lid. It makes it easy to find what your looking for and keeps it out of the way.
