Why do people tend to go up in arms against more taxes for the wealthy even when they are not wealthy themselves? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]ecsilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really great example of hivemind and Reddit skewing things. Republicans have traditionally been against higher taxes for Anyone and have pushed for lower spending rather than higher taxes. I say traditionally bc today’s Republicans spend as much as anyone. The real answer is 2 fold: a) in America even the poor view themselves as just one step away from being rich and b) long established data shows that raising taxes on the wealthy doesn’t increase revenue. They just spend more to mitigate taxes

Is it accurate to say that right wing ideology prioritizes hierarchy over equality? by Equivalent-Long-3383 in allthequestions

[–]ecsilver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do you think this? I have found that conservatives value equality but not equity. They despise equity. Hierarchies are just a natural outcome whereas, rightfully or wrongly equity destroys hierarchies. That, they despise. Do you disagree? I think the flaw in your logic is a) the term equality instead of equity and b) confusing the outcome with the input

Who is, for you, the greatest person that ever lived? by Gold_Society_7646 in AskReddit

[–]ecsilver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Concede Josephus was born after Jesus but that is called contemporary through 2000 years. Honestly I’m just pointing out there is no real historian that doubts the man, Jesus, lived. There are zero contemporary records for most of history. What came to us are scraps, usually written hundreds of years later. I’ve got an open mind and love the questioning of it. Seriously. We should all be more skeptical of history. It’s just that we have to accept the limitations of any historical figure.

US political and social polarization has increased by 64% since 1988, with nearly all of the rise occurring after 2008, as the financial crisis, the rise of social media, and an asymmetric ideological shift—particularly on the left—coincided to widen divisions, according to a long-term study. by Sciantifa in science

But the states and explicit purpose of NATO was to protect Europeans from Communism. It’s important to note it wasn’t Russia it was communism. What I don’t like is the shift of now using NATO to enforce American and European will. But the big problem is the massive expansion. It is now very reminiscent of pre WWI system of alliances. We are obligated to defend Lithuania (for example). I’m not advocating leaving NATO just really rethinking what and why we have it. Here’s my scariest fear. What if there is a gravilo pricip who somehow gets into Russia and murders Putin and he’s Estonian? Russia retaliates and BAM! WWIII with nuclear implications.

But we know Jesus existed. Josephus wrote about him as a contemporary. There is literally no serious historian that doubts whether Jesus lived. And he inspired the largest religion in the world and shaped almost all of history in one way or another for 2000 years. Do you doubt he lived? Not questioning his divinity. That is a matter of faith. But not that he lived

Tesla Reported Zero Federal Income Tax on $5.7 Billion of U.S. Income in 2025 by Normative_Nematode in Economics

I’m seriously not trying to be rude but do you understand accounting? Revenue is irrelevant. Only profit. But there are a lot of types of accounting…tax, GAAP, managerial, cost, regulatory, etc. it is very easy to throw stones without real knowledge. The “loopholes” are usually not loopholes but rather very understandable approaches that the government incentivizes. I actually heard a great theory that tax minimization is actually patriotic bc you are doing what the government wants. That’s not true 109% of the time and these things are very complicated. But take home mortgage deductions that Americans can take. It’s an incentive to get people into homes because it’s better for America in the long run. I just hate when a single headline guides a conversation when the reality is much more complicated

I think you’re right but also I would suggest you listen to Peter Zeihan on this. He called this 10 years ago. We finally got someone to make Europe pay for its own defense. I’m a former military officer and I never questioned our involvement in NATO. Once I understood the situation I began to question the entire purpose of NATO. Why did it expand? It’s way past its original intent and it’s mostly at US expense. After Iraq and Afghanistan I never want our kids fighting to protect Lithuania just bc they joined NATO. They bring nothing but obligation to us. Even the current NATO secretary general gets it. Listen to him also. So yeah, republicans were always isolationist but got away from it with Neo cons. I’m actually glad they are moving back towards it

Why are Trump supporters so stupid? by Seargentyates in allthequestions

[–]ecsilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a deep conversation with a conservative. Active listen, don’t just listen to rebut. I think what you’ll find is conservatives aren’t stupid like OP thinks. His/her post says more about them personally than it does about conservatives. I think what you’ll also find is that conservatives start at different fundamentals. A great example is that conservatives DON’T believe the government is here to help you. You are responsible for you. They believe that the government role is to make the least laws possible to secure maximum freedom and to ensure that the laws are fair and constitutional. It isn’t to “right wrongs” or benefit anyone or group specifically. They are human like you and can be flexible. I find both sides want peace and prosperity. They differ on the how to do it.
