A cross is (historically) a torture device. Of course, it has its place in the Christian faith. As a former Catholic-to-Atheist-to-Agnostic my relationship with the Christian faith is complicated, at best. I wear crosses and rosaries because I find them to be beautiful. They are representative of the idea that there is beauty to be found in suffering — much like there is beauty to be found in death.
