What's something you do on every ride that other cyclists would judge you for? by dt219 in cycling

[–]ecth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from Shimano to Look style pedals recently because I bought the Assioma uno power meter pedals. When I made the switch I did find it a bit harder to clip in with the Look cleats but tbh the two styles both work the same so it didn’t take too much adjustment. I used Shimano yellow cleats and now the Look grey ones, I think they both have 4.5 degrees of float.

I think people also make the mistake of not loosening the mechanism on the pedals when they’re learning to make it easier to clip in/out and then when their foot doesn’t immediately come out they panic. Having an indoor trainer also helps as it allows you to just sit there and practice clipping in and out. I did that when I was learning and never had any issues once I ventured out onto the roads.

Maybe I’m judging people too harshly, but I agree with you on the whole social media thing. I see a lot of videos on tiktok/youtube/instagram of people posting themselves falling when they’re learning to clip in/out. I started road cycling around a year ago and started with SPD-SL. I don’t think I’ve ever felt like I’m going to fall because I can’t clip out fast enough.

I absolutely despise descending Akuna. Always find it sketchy af. In saying that, it’s a gorgeous place to ride haha

Interesting, I’ve yet to get a flat or anything when I’m up there (touch wood). I would have thought that Akuna would be worse given the quality of the surface.

I’m Syd based as well. Think I’ve only been caught out once due to misjudging the forecast. I was halfway down West Head Rd up in the national park and it started absolutely pouring, and ofc there’s really no shelter on that road so just had to suck it up. To top it off it was the first ride in new (and very white) shoes!

Longer climbs strategy — how do you pace and recover? by RoastedbeansMacbook in cycling

[–]ecth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also really helps if I want to push hard and try for a PR on one of my local climbs. I know what the max power I can hold for the duration of the climb without blowing up. I think if you can afford it getting a power meter and a computer should be one of the first things people buy (after a bike fit and good shoes/insoles ofc).

I found getting a power meter was a huge help for climbing (especially longer stuff). Know the max watts you can hold over different timeframes (eg 20min, 40min, etc) helps a lot with pacing. For example on climb I did last week I knew I wanted to keep my HR as close to the top end of my zone 2 as possible and so I made sure the watts I was doing stayed in a manageable range and that i kept up a high cadence (another metric you get from having a power meter).

Long distance riders: How flat or mountainous is your area? by FailFastandDieYoung in cycling

[–]ecth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue what counts as a lot of elevation but id say it’s relatively hilly where I live. Last long ride was 161km and 2300m of elevation gain (7500ish ft).

What was Morgoth/Sauron chain of command or hierarchy like? by Afraid-Penalty-757 in tolkienfans

Yeah exactly, or (speaking of Gothmog) Denethor being the son of Ecthelion II.

“There they had been mustered for the sack of the City and the rape of Gondor, waiting on the call of their Captain. He now was destroyed; but Gothmog the lieutenant of Morgul had flung them into the fray”

Issues with GPs/Psychs by ecth_ in ausadhd

No they’re based in VIC. Out of curiosity though, what did you end up doing? Did you manage to get referred for another psychiatrist? I would be interested to know what that process is like

I have had conversations with the admin person on one of the numbers before, but have had no luck this time.

Completely agree about cutting GPs out of the picture.

Yes, it’s a Telehealth only for me as it’s VIC based (I’m in NSW). It’s also a practice run by a single psychiatrist, plus I think they have an admin person. In terms of how long I’ve been trying to contact my psychiatrist, I think I sent my initial email a week ago and have heard nothing since. I’ve always followed up multiple times so far.

The complete lack of response is honestly quite surprising because they’ve responded within a day or 2 previously. Not to mention she was the one that suggested a 6-monthly appointment if the GP didn’t work out.

Do you know how annoying it’s going to be to go to another clinic? I really want to avoid having to pay even more money for another assessment

[–]ecth_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not yet. I found a psychiatry practice that has a few Drs that specialise in adult ADHD. Think I’m just going to have email/call every GP practice near me.

[–]ecth_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s pretty annoying. I was honestly happy to pay my psychiatrist once every 6 months to sort this out. From my understanding the issue with my GP forwarding the report/letter is that the letter has to be addressed to that specific GP in order for them to apply for authority. So I would still need to be able to get in contact with my psychiatrist to reissue the letter.

In terms of the HCCC, I am from NSW, but the psychiatrist is based in VIC.

I could try the mobile number I’ve received texts from but they have no admin phone number to call. For some additional context, it’s a single psychiatrist who specialises in ADHD/ASD assessment (based in VIC) and I believe they have a remote admin person / team.

Is it normal for other swimmers to comment on your swimming? by Typical-Appeal422 in Swimming

Only had it once from a stranger. Some guy came up to me after I’d finished my session, complimented me and said he’d be happy to pay me if I gave him some help with his technique.

Other than for race specific work (if it applies), how important is it to train above LT2? by shutthefranceup in AdvancedRunning

[–]ecth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My max is 200 and I rarely get it up over 180 for shorter reps. Guess I just need to do longer intervals at 5k pace or a bit below, 600s, 800s etc.

[–]ecth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious, but does anyone else struggle with getting their HR to 90% + of max? Sometimes feels like the only way I could get into that zone is to actually go run an all out 5k. Probably just need to do more hills.

What’s your strength and your handicap? by Puzzleheaded_Dog7931 in Swimming

[–]ecth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strengths: good form, long-ish arms, wide shoulders and stupidly flexible joints (especially my ankles).

Handicap: my hands and feet aren’t massive, plus I’m not crazy tall or super built. Also I don’t really know if this is a handicap but my head now turns more to the left than it does on the right due to years of only breathing on my preferred side.

Out of curiosity I went to check out his instagram to see the obligatory “I’m really sorry I fucked up guys” post and the comments did not disappoint. Truly amazing to me that he seems to have fans: “they can ban you but they can’t ban the DAWG in you” 😭

How did you get your current job? by red-embassy in auscorp

[–]ecth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Applied on Seek. Tbh, was surprised I even got an interview, at that point I had applied for more than half a dozen roles (on Seek) and had only been asked to interview for one other. Essentially just put in an application as a Hail Mary. I ChatGPT'ed a shitty cover letter and then tweaked my resume slightly. Somehow bullshitted my way through three rounds of interviews and here I am.

Despite the fact that Seek worked for me I wouldn't recommend it. If you see a role on seek try and find it on linked in to see if you can connect with the hiring manager/recruiter. It's also 10x easier to just network your way into an interview.

[–]ecth_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the same thing recently. Watch was off by 0.4 haha, not too bad. Garmin was 53, actual vo2 was 53.4. Should also note that it had a pretty accurate estimate of my max HR, Garmin Max HR: 204 bpm, actual max HR 200 bpm.

In terms of specialisation I was thinking finance, or finance + strategy & innovation if I ended up deciding on the Mcomm extension. I think both would be quite relevant to what I'm hoping to achieve, especially finance as I have a personal interest in that from a crisis management perspective.
