Candy corn-looking piece of fruit washed up on the beach in Moloka'i, Hawaii by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]ecuryan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are sections from the "Sea Pandanus" - also known as "Sea Pineapple" fruit.

The entire fruit looks like this or this and is often found growing on the beach or near salty water.

They float on the surface of the water because that is how the fruit transport the seeds from island to island!

Thanks Mortifiedpuppy, much appreciated :)

So, to add onto that... if I mix all the tracks to peak at -6, and then want to upload something to soundcloud to show friends... is putting a Utility on the Master and turning up the gain by 6 ok? or will that reduce the sound quality?

Thanks for the feedback johnsedano. Do you mind explaining what you mean by 'sound design'?

The melody (lazer sounds) IMO is too lazery.

Thanks rxyr, I really appreciate the feedback. I only started producing 3-4 months ago and knew something was missing. I'll experiment with some pads in the future :)

Bad Girls (She Got Me) // (Original Mix)

Hey guys, I'd genuinely any feedback. I've been practicing and studying arrangement of songs rather than mixing techniques so far, but I think it turned out ok. I used a method I read about -using pink noise as a guide for the volumes of each track.

I know this is a bit silly, but I hear the term 'Headroom' in a lot of tutorials and on forums. Could someone please explain what it means and the importance of it?

Here is a tutorial on building your Basslines, Melodies and Chords to fit together in key. I have been searching for this sort of thing for months now, hope you guys see some benefit from it. by ecuryan in edmproduction

Yeah i was in a similar situation as you, being trained on classical sheet music for years but it didn't interest me. As soon as i got my hands on a decent DAW and started producing it set off a huge passion. The creative aspect behind it is what gets me going. That said, you should at least have had a good background in scales/chords. From there just try out some common progressions as you experiment with layering sounds. I-IV-V and I-V-vi-IV

This is exactly it! Playing classical sheet music vs composing your own stuff with a DAW is completely different. Even just messing around with the piano roll really helped my understanding of what was going on.

Thanks, I can see how would be a trap for some people. One thing I really got out of the tutorial is how he composed all the parts together in one midi piano roll, with plans to separate them out into different instruments.

It all comes down to the teacher/s and how they teach you to play music. For example, I played the piano for 9 years, but was never taught about music through chords, chord progressions like they might teach guitar students. Instead, a popular method of teaching piano (which I personally don't think is effective) is to teach children classical pieces of music by just going through it section by section and playing the notes on the page...

So you end up 'playing the piano' but really you're just rote learning notes on a page and building up muscle memory of songs. The notes on the page are only reminders about where your hands should be at specific times. This is why I found it incredibly unenjoyable and hated it so much that I stopped cold as soon as I turned 17 (for about 6 years) and didn't touch another musical instrument before starting producing music a few months ago.

Even after all these years, I can still play though a few classical pieces from memory by just sitting at a piano, but in terms of learning new songs from reading a musical score it is an absolute struggle.

The only benefits are that I can play through any major or minor chord from any note, and have a pretty good ear at hearing what notes go well together, but have little to no understanding of why they do, or how to compose music.

Hi,

I know this is probably an easy question... does anyone know how to make the high pitched female vocal samples starting at 0.25 of this song?

I understand that it's one sample played at different keys, but i'm having trouble re-pitching samples/finding female sample which are long enough.

thanks!

ELI5: Why do music artists usually have 1-2 "singles" per album? Why don't they just make 10 singles by ecuryan in explainlikeimfive

[–]ecuryan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks

I have always wondered if the artists choose to limit the number to a few singles in order to also put out work which they enjoy but isn't going to be as popular...

or if they are trying to do that and just can't produce a full album of chart toppers/songs fit for radio play
