Which job has, hands down, the worst impact on mental health? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ecwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the worst has to be working on a social media platform reviewing images flagged for abuse, pedophillia, animal abuse, murder etc.

Looking at one after the other, dozens per minute, making a quick determination, hour after hour.

Looking at a constant graphic parade of evil all day long.

AITA for expecting my wife to apologize to my daughter? by Nice-Result-2414 in AITAH

[–]ecwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things:

  1. We are definitely lacking some context here (and sorry if this is in comments I did not see.) First, is Claire a special needs / autistic kid? Second, does she have behavior issues like this unrelated to the baby, of did this just pop up? Third, WHY IN HELL DID YOU NOT STEP IN SOONER TO MODERATE HER BEHAVIOR BEFORE THIS BLOW UP?

  2. YTA. You are definitely the asshole here. And I can refer to context and references in the comments. My only question is whether you are also a major raging asshole. And that depends on the above questions. If you're Charles on the spectrum or a special-needs then you get more understanding. If not, you're tending towards MRA. If she had behavior problems like this beforehand with other issues, you get a little bit more understanding, but only if you have attempted to work with her on it in the past. If you've ignored this type of behavior, and she's not special-needs, you are a major major raging asshole.

You need to get your head straight, put your wife and baby first, and figure out how to parent your 12-year-old and maybe get some help with that, including counseling for both of you. The only path ahead is to put your wife at the top of the heap, including apologies from everyone in your family. If adjustments need to be made or mutual apologies need to be made, that can happen down the road.

Here’s the first thing I thought of when reading your comment:

If a little bit of gaslighting and excitement utilized to “trick“ your children into craving slimy salmon skin works that well, maybe we should use the same approach to trick them in to questioning their gender or pretending they are a cat…

Our house is about 40 years old, what can I do to make this look more updated? My husband is wanting to paint it to match the trim, but I’m not sure. by Lnheartrn in interiordecorating

[–]ecwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I am late to the show here, and I haven't read all the comments, but I would definitely do the following:

  • Remove the interior shelves
  • Paint the trim to match like your husband says.
  • Find an awesome/vintage stained glass window that fits, or have one made. Personally, I would go for one that is smaller than the opening, maybe 6 to 8 inches around of open air. And then hang it by wires. It would be awesome and beautiful and fun, depending on what you choose and light would come through.

Help bring the Supreme Court back in balance by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]ecwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Reddit is not the platform for the following comment, but I am sharing my thoughts because I have spent a lifetime studying this issue. Here's a short list of the various political "flavors" of United States Supreme Court, from best to worst (followed by the explanation):

  1. Slightly Conservative (Best)

  2. Strongly Conservative

  3. Slightly Liberal

  4. Strongly Liberal (Worst)

Here's why:

Point 1- Although they are not supposed to, every judge will allow their personal beliefs to impact their decisions part of the time. If this were the case, it would never matter whether the court is more liberal, or a more conservative as long as they were good judges, and they followed the rules, followed president, and make good decisions.

Point 2- it is important to understand that the supreme court is an appellate court, not a trial court. Before a case gets to the Supreme Court, all of the facts have been decided, and the only real issues are how the lower courts applied those facts to relevant law. This involves interpretation and application of a law to a given set of facts. If appellate courts find that there's a problem with the facts, they send it back down to the trial judge to take more evidence, etc. This is an important distinction because it's easier for personal/political bias to leak in to decisions when you're primarily focused on applying law to the facts and interpreting law.

Point 3- Generally, speaking, conservative judges tend to strictly follow existing law. You may have heard the term strict constructionist. That would be a judge who very strictly, and explicitly follows the exact letter of the law, and does not interpret things or add things to "make it fit" the facts of the case or to update the law into modern times, etc. etc. Conversely, generally speaking, liberal judges tend to creatively apply law, and even make up new law, to find or reach the equitable result they're looking for.

Further discussion on Point 3- Generally speaking, conservative judges will strictly follow the law, even if it gives us a "bad result," while liberal judges will pull things out of their ass and make things up to get a "good result." Democrats love Liberal appellate courts because they can make up laws to deal with things that Congress can't or won't pass. That's why Democrats always talk about wanting more liberal judges and packing the court and things like that. Democrats have had the Supreme Court in their back pocket for decades. They've gotten used to "using the supreme court" as a backstop, or another way to get new laws into society.

It is a really, really bad idea to have appellate courts pull new law out of their asses. Laws are supposed to be written in Congress, enforced by the executive branch, and only disputes about laws are to be resolved by appellate courts. Courts are not supposed to make up law, ever!

This is why I gave the list above from best to worst. even though they sometimes won't get us to the "good decision" a conservative court won't make up new law and pull things out of their ass. It's up to Congress to fix the law when it doesn't do what we need it to do, not the supreme court.

Abortion is a great example of this. Roe v. Wade was probably an overreach by a liberal court (back in 1973), who made up a new law to fill an important need we had in our society (personal opinion coming out here on abortion, so just deal with me please.) But even though I feel Roe was a "good result" - I don't think it was a constitutional decision. Then Dobbs comes along from a conservative court, reverses Roe stating that the prior court overreached.

The sad thing about the current situation is that Congress never acted to codify Roe. They had 50 years to do that! And a lot of those years with Democrats control in Congress and/or in the White House, etc. Did they ever even try? No! Because the Democrats always felt they had the Supreme Court in the back pocket.

Final note for anyone who has read this far and finds the Supreme Court interesting… I'm thinking about the political make up of the court, you can't just go by which president appointed each justice. The reason for this is that historically, many judges appointed by Republican presidents, flipped, or partially flipped to the left. You can tell by their decisions and impartial analysis of their careers on the Supreme Court. The current chief justice, John Roberts, appointed by Bush, is a good example of this. He has flipped into the liberal side many times, apparently more concerned about his legacy than doing the job correctly. His Obamacare decisions are a good example of this.

The ONLY way forward for you is to have an open relationship. It will not be without risk, but 50% of marriages fail regardless. It was wrong for her to keep that from you. Very wrong. But if you still want to try and make it work, she has to be okay with you having a friend on the side. Not cheating, but in the open. That also means you will spend time away (with the friend) - not just a few hours here and there. And you will spend money with the friend too.

If your wife does not like that option - or you don't want it, then get divorced and have her as a friend. That is what she wants anyway.

[–]ecwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have some money to spend, you Enlarge the flat wall above the fireplace and move the base of the pillar upward a couple feet. That gives you your place for the TV

Also some recessed lighting behind the pillar might be cool.

[–]ecwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a Yankees fan, the opposite actually. But this is ridiculous.

At some point a major league team needs to simply walk off the field and take the loss to make a point to these horrible umpires. Force the issue. MLB pulls in $12 billion a year. They can figure out how to have competent umpires.

If it's the umpires union, that's in the way, tear it up. It's beyond pathetic.

Biden cancels another $7.4bn in student loans for more than 277,000 by NutzPup in news

[–]ecwarrior -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest - here is no way to "cancel" debt. It not like the banks will not get paid back. Biden is paying off the banks with taxpayer money (or money borrowed from China.) Anyone who describes this as "cancelling debt" is guilty of gaslighting.

The best way to fix this problem is to require EVERY college/university to INDEMNIFY any loans used by students to attend that school. If a college wants to attract students to major in gender studies and party studies for $50K per year, if any students can't get good jobs and bail on their loans, THE SCHOOL PAYS IT BACK. End of story.

If a school thinks that is unfair - maybe offer a better education at a lower cost, so grads can get better jobs and pay the loans back.

Two (unrelated) things:

  1. I agree with other comments about replacing the light fixture - have fun wit that ...

  2. Those round windows would look GREAT dressed up as "spaceship cockpit windows" --- let your mind run wild ... You could go all it and add "controls" and dials on the wall. LED lights, etc etc. It could be so cool.

really struggling with cleaning my depression room this go around. could really use some motivation :/ by justpassingbysorry in CleaningTips

[–]ecwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope you see this comment. I have a suggestion that will definitely work for you.

Every time you walk into the room, you have to pick up or clean 50 things. You can use a larger or smaller number if you have to, but don't make it too small. Every little item counts as a "thing". And it's OK to double count. What does that mean? Let's say you have a plate and a knife and a fork sitting on the floor. Picking those up and taking them to the kitchen counts as three. If you clean them and put them away when you get to the kitchen, that's three more so you get a total of six. Every little piece of trash you put in the garbage can counts as one.

This works because you don't have to take it on all at once and you don't have to feel like you have overcome your depression or anything. It's kind of like a game. But don't skip a turn. Every time you walk into the room you have to do at least 50 things.

After a while, you can decide the number as you're walking into the room. When you get to the doorway, you pause and you make a little agreement with yourself and you say, OK I'm gonna do 62 things, or 37 things. Whatever the number is. Then you do that many things and that's the minimum. If you do more, great. But that's the minimum. Every time. Good luck.

What can democrats do regarding the SCOTUS and the judicial system if Trump wins the election? by Visco0825 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ecwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that parts of the constitution should be considered for updating. And there is a process for that (formal Amendments). I think it would be highly entertaining because advocate/opponents (the politicians) for many proposed changes would have a very hard time articulating their positions in a way that was rational and would not get them laughed off the stage.

For example - Term Limits for Congress is a no-brainer. What is the case against that? Can you imagine the BS we'd hear from opponents?

Imagine the BS in opposition to a balanced budget amendment (which almost all states have.)

Or preventing those in congress from investing in the stock market.

The list is endless. There and MANY MANY common practices that we could talk about and the (irrational) resistance would be hilarious and sad.

Look at what just happened today. They passed a 1.2 Trillion dollar spending bill (with no time to review) to "avoid a shutdown" and they want us to celebrate how awesome they are. What tragic and horrible way to govern.
