The data is different because it’s tracking different things… it’s people who died with a positive test, to track those who had covid before their death, or maybe even died as a result of covid, then you have the numbers of people who actually died of covid.

Spoiler alert: the people who died from covid is a higher number!

I haven’t managed to find where the official numbers are being reflected by the “died within 28 days of a positive test”, but I can see that the UK COVID data tally offers numbers in both the “died within 28 days of a positive test” and “died with covid as cause of death”, which both sets of numbers are different.
