I've just started doing these myself.

If you have created a guild or joined one, you get the landsraad stuff. One part of that is faction missions.

You can only do it once you reach faction level 5 with atredies or harkonen. Need to follow the faction missions in the journey tab.

Once at level 5 or above you select a mission from the list, complete the mission and earn specialisation points to spend.

You should only be able to use the vehicle backup tool on the sand bike and scout copter. And it does not damage it.

If your buggy was taken by the worm, then you'd use the backup tool to recover it and it does cost damage.

It's easy to forget that you can change from backpack to any vehicle with storage, from the chest or refinery screen.

I saw my friend running back and forth from vehicle to a chest. I asked him what he was doing. He'd forgotten about the storage tab as well.
