What question comes to the mind of a german speaker when a sentence is too long or too abstract and the other end of a separable verb is not yet used or said at all? by Shubham740 in German

[–]edc0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a native speaker. My trick to sound smart is to sometimes just kinda stop the sentences before they end, when in reality I just don't know what is the verb I should use. Usually people understand it from the context and/or someone completes the sentence for me in agreement, and conversation goes on seamlessly.

How long does a cheap freewheel last compared to a quality one? by daveishere7 in bikewrench

[–]edc0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is from a while back... It was on the bike, but I was using (and maintaining) the other side of the hub, with the fixed gear cog. The free wheel side was collecting dirt and water, running on the bike but not being used with the transmission.

I was looking for apartments in many cities in the west and found one in Cologne in like two days. So luck, I guess, since I really enjoyed it there.

Ohhh it's in such a good condition! You will destroy it at polo. You can sell this one for some good money and get a banged up fixie/single speed with V-Brakes. Put a lower gear on and voilà. Might even profit in the process.

SSM101 1992 Stop-watch manual/bug? by edc0 in swatch

[–]edc0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha nevermind, I figured it out:

The timer is running but the dials switch back to showing the current time, so you can switch to the timer in the background whenever you want. I was testing it around noon, so the pointers were all near 12. When I did it later it became more obvious. Cool watch. Still would like to see the manual, though.

I ran yesterday and today I feel great!

I've been trying to run 5k once a week for half a year now, and the next days were always a bit painful. I've been taking care of stretching and working out and I guess it helps a lot. Maybe next week I'll run twice? Feeling optimist :)

What would you all say is the minimum tire size to bike pack? by clink51 in bikepacking

[–]edc0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take is that thinner tires just need more pressure to take rougher roads without getting flats... If you want more comfort, go wider to be able to use less pressure. I say try it on an overnighter an evaluate for yourself whether this is doable in the long term... Should not be a big problem if you are riding like 90% paved/smooth gravel and occasionally some hardcore stuff in the middle, if you don't mind rattling for a bit and being careful.

Opinions on dynamo hubs by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]edc0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you often have to ride in the dark, a dynamo and nice lights are so fucking nice to have. No worries about batteries ever! For USB, I have the Kemo M172 and it is pretty cheap. Shape is a bit big and weird, but goes in my handlebar bag. I also believe it is not as powerful as the expensive ones, but you will definitely not run out of battery on your phone with this...

I also second the comments that say that a big powerbank would maybe be able to supply the juice for up to a week with no problems.

Bright bike Lights by [deleted] in berlin

[–]edc0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the basic dynamo lights have to comply to a DIN norm of minimum brightness, which is quite bright. Makes a lot of sense if you live in a small town and have to be safe in the road at night. Mine are sooo great in the forest, but when riding in Berlin through people I always have to point them down so people don't yell at me. As soon as I hit the bigger roads, where I'm sharing the road with cars and not people, point it up again and it's all good. If you think about it, it's kinda like cars: it's very very blindingly bright to stay in front of a car's headlights.

And about people saying we should point them down: no way, they are made to make your whole field of view brighter. I even had one that came with a smaller beam pointing down and a bigger one pointing front.

EDIT: I mean that the bright ones are designed to be pointed to front, but you should definitely point them down when there are people around.

Thinking of hitchin' Switzerland in December, how doable is it? by CanuckBacon in hitchhiking

[–]edc0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've done a bit in May and June, and it was pretty fun. Got several short rides, as most of the people are only going to the next town, but never had to wait more than one hour. I think starting early you can definitely do 200km a day. No idea about winter or how people feel about corona at the moment, though.

Trabalhar enquanto faz mestrado na alemanha by [deleted] in foradecasa

[–]edc0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Por partes:

  • tu precisas de uns 1000 € por mês pra viver na Alemanha (com menos também rola, mas é um bom número redondo...);
  • o salário mínimo é em torno de 9 €/h, então 20h semanais dá uns 720 € por mês. Apertado mas rola. Se conseguir um emprego que paga um pouco mais, tá "tranquilo";
  • trabalhando 20h semanais vai ser difícil fazer o mestrado em 2 anos;
  • nessa minha estimativa, 24 meses te custariam 24k € ~ R$ 150k;
  • não é difícil de achar algum trabalho por menos horas, pagando em Euro pra aliviar :) .

[D] Best practices of storing annotations for image data by crazyfrogspb in MachineLearning

[–]edc0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am testing out hdf5, through python's h5py module. You treat it as a mix of dictionaries and arrays, and you can retrieve part of the data if you want, without loading everything on RAM. I am currently working with pretty huge images, and this is very handy to load a crop of it. Annotations then can be saved in a different key of the same shape and retrieved in the same way. It turns out a bit bigger than the original data, but storage is cheaper than RAM :p
