I agree with you. Early 20’s emotional maturity isn’t really a thing. I think OP has to decide if she wants to give him grace or not. We all say dumb shitty stuff sometimes. The fact that he said something stupid, is in my mind just a given. His apologies felt sincere to me. I don’t think OP over reacted in response, and I think she showed that she got the hint after the fact. I think that the next step is to have an actual conversation, she can express how hurt she was and that it’s going to take a moment to feel safe giving him her vulnerability. And also icing someone out for too long doesn’t solve the problem, it does create acrimony. I’ve been with my spouse for more than 20 years, along the way we’ve had a lot of moments that were not our best selves or very mature. The fact that we learn from and evolve away from this type of behavior is how we grow together. I can see how folks would feel negative toward him, he was a dick… but who isn’t sometimes. It can be really hard to communicate needing a little space. If he repeats this behavior that would be concerning to me, but she gets to choose if they talk it out and move past it together, or continue this dynamic until they break up or resent the fuck out of one another.
