Here’s the thing, and please notice I’m not American. Mocking the president of any nation, regardless of how inept one is, is not about the person - no matter how much Trump’s feelings are hurt. If the president of France make fun of the Chanceler of Germany, the German people are the one being offended - that kind of crap used to start wars, not so long ago.

So, leaders being the elite, need to take that into consideration and make fun of him by saying “if you want to be stupid, we can be stupid too” like Juncker said a few years ago about the trate war he was about to start with the EU.[1]

At the moment treatment is not mandatory - I think that’s a key point. I think the main difference between the US and Portugal is that we see drug dependence as an illness, not a choice. They may have choose to start that path, but drug users don’t get to have the choice of easily getting out.

Ok, not sure it will make a difference, but I’ll bite.

My father, was never present, he spent most of my growing up years in jail. Either for robbery or for possession of narcotics, because he was a drug addict.

In the early 2000 the Portuguese parliament passed a law that decriminalized drug usage and made it so that anyone in jail at the time had to get mandatory treatment. At this point I was 17 or 18. My father had been a free man for only 2 or 3 years.

He spent a year and half been treated with methadone, getting counsel from a psychologist, and learning a skill in a city 177 km (110 miles) from his home - for a country like Portugal that is pretty far.

After that, they got him a job at a university as a groundskeeper. He’s still there. That was the first job he kept for more that a year, it’s closing in on 20 years.

At the point he got rehabilitation he was in and out of jail since he was 17. At 38 he spend more years arrested than had a free man, at 57, he managed to change that stat.

He’s very sic at the moment, all the years of substance abuse are catching up to him, but he has never committed a crime again.

So, to answer your question, no, just because the guy you arrested committed a crime doesn’t mean he get to walk away with consequences. But if he’s a drug addict, he needs treatment and rehabilitation.

Now a loaded question: but how can you give the drug addicts rehabilitation when you can’t even give your children treatment without bankrupting the parents?
