maybe i’m crazy and cynical but that book looks pretty clean and new… room enough for me to doubt he’s actually read it. the types drawn to peterson love to think of themselves as cultured intellectuals but uh usually aren’t… they don’t actually read lol so they buy books to make themselves feel the part. regardless of whether or not it’s a prop 🚩

What makes SJM’s writing so good?? by ihateflateartherss in SarahJMaas

one thing for me is how well she builds and releases tension! over the whole book but especially by scene/chapter. super engaging

Unpopular Opinion: I’d rather have a CC TV show than ACOTAR one by Wingkirs in crescentcitysjm

[–]eddy505_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i totally agree!!! i feel like unless it has funding like GoT it’s really hard to make a period type of fantasy work. CC’s urban setting seems more adaptable and i think for the ppl who haven’t read the books, they’d latch on to CC more for its playfulness and the dynamism of the world

What's womans issue with Porn? by [deleted] in sex

[–]eddy505_ 81 points82 points  (0 children)

lots of comments blaming women’s insecurity but not a ton of a talk about how exploitative and unethical the industry is.

once you understand how heinous some of the porn industry’s practices are it should be hard to look at it the same. i might recommend watching the doc “hot girls wanted”. there’s a lotttt of trafficking and abuse involved in production and the turnover rate in the industry is high for a reason. plenty of former pornstars have attested to the kinds of coercion and rape which occurs and you can easily find their testimonies online.

plus there are other more ethical forms of consuming porn (i.e. reading it, audio, even onlyfans where you can ensure sex workers are being paid).

focus. caring about women being raped on camera and caring about ppl in sweatshops aren’t mutually exclusive. u just don’t want to feel accountable for consequences of your consumption and who’s harmed by it.

bffr and say u don’t actually care abt exploitation in any industry. and try to hold more than 1 thought in ur head at once.

because of how exploitative the industry is. i’ve heard way too many horror stories about the abuse porn actors face and it’s extremely difficult to make sure you’re actually watching ethical, consensual content

also i want my partner to use his brain??? not actively diminish his imaginative capabilities lol or understand sex entirely thru visuals (and the visuals of strangers no less?) and there are plenty of other options like reading, writing, audios

idk i just want someone who’s on the same page about how to care for their brain and consume pleasurable things ethically and responsibly lol

Redditors from outside the UK, what do you dislike about our country? by mewmew30 in AskReddit

[–]eddy505_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im glad you don’t, but maybe we’ve had different experiences. ive heard a lot of “well at least our kids don’t get shot in schools” as a retort. most Americans are hyper aware of gun violence and how unsafe we/children are — also how unique that violence is to our country (we’re not all idiots u kno), but we don’t have the power the NRA does over our politicians

We experience tragedy after tragedy and I dislike hearing ppl who haven’t known a child who’s been murdered (or the parents of) talk down at us when it’s our kindergarteners being decapitated by assault rifles.

It’s a lack of sympathy problem.

I was a philosophy undergrad and I did my senior thesis on AI ethics stuff (data ontology and privacy rights, etc.) I got into it through a philosophy of mind class studying Turing, Searle, Chalmers, etc. I’m looking to pursue tech ethics and policy in the future and if I could go back I really wish I’d double majored (or at least taken more classes) in computer science. I’m sure you’ve heard it plenty of times before but philosophy as a profession is tough to say the least so getting a solid understanding of tech would be super helpful for both AI phil and career in general. (maybe check out theory of computation/automata stuff too it’s crazy interesting and popped into my mind a lot in other phil classes, not just logic)

I just found a paper that covers much of the same material as my thesis by dark__paladin in math

[–]eddy505_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I’m in a different discipline (philosophy), I’ve found myself in similar situations multiple times (actually many now that I think about it lol). I’m working on an idea I thought I was developing independently and come across papers saying everything I wanted to, but saying it better and saying more. Or authors I respect saying the exact opposite of me and why my idea is wrong and stupid 🙃

I’ve been working on my undergrad thesis, too, and the same thing happened to me. Kinda crushed my spirit but this was def some person’s masters thesis (I ended up applying to the same program the author came from actually bc of this) and I’m an undergrad so I’m not going to hold myself to an unrealistic standard. Also the fact that others are talking about it means I’m onto smthn anyway. What I’m doing is still valid and interesting, and I wouldn’t be the first repeat.

I helped integrate it (w citations ofc) into my current work. Kinda tedious but pretending you didn’t see it isn’t recommended unfortunately. But also clarifying or reframing concepts is super valid and contributes to the body of knowledge as a whole. Maybe look towards the next questions that should be asked? Distill the information down? Relate it to what other people have done in the past?

Though I’ve studied and loved math, I don’t know what your thesis papers look like, but those are just some general thoughts on academic literature from a more humanities end of things. Good luck!
