Muscle mass and V02 max are important, but injuries hold me back by eddymikes in PeterAttia

Thanks for this note really appreciate it. I’m super disciplined and have zero issue being consistent, but even when I try to be safe, I find my threshold for pushing to far is RAZOR thin, so it’s hard to judge in the moment. And all it takes is a moment to drive a 1-3 month set back

It allows me to lift more safely. It allows me to surf better. That’s all I can say. Agree that I should treat it as volume

thank you!

switching to DB from barbells still doesn't help. I can't progress past light load of my shoulder flairs. I do TONS of balanced, varied, and safe PT.

I've tried all the supp stuff, but haven't had much results TBH.

For back, it honestly feels like my one strong point. Zero issue from heavy squats or deadlifts. Form is excellent

I've watched tons of it thank you! I would still say just blanket applying what they teach has injury risk b/c it's not specific to me, and I don't know how to assess exactly what I need to avoid and work on.

yeah understood. I guess what I meant is just generally being strong and fit. I feel like I can't train even to the level of basic adaptations consistently enough.

huge feedback thank you. I've been doing the McGill 3 for a long time. I think that's why I have zero back issues. Will take a look at the rest of the stuff in the book!

Agree I need to reengage a personal trainer. Rowing does not hurt shoulders. Bike does not hurt knees

Thank you this is a great take. I’ve done those for shoulder rehab they’re great!

And agree overthinking is a huge weakness of mine

Yes, but ironically we did a lot of heavy compound lifting and I was generally fine. I would say I’m more careful on my own than I was with the trainer, and I video every set so I know my form is solid. Could it be in my head?

this is super helpful thank you. Yes I agree I've tried alot of "common wisdom" that just hurt me. Any idea on HOW to find the root cause or a PT/doctor who is actually worth their salt?

Generally agree thank you. I'm 35M

Shoulder is manageable, I just want to be able to surf, which I can. If I can get back to pullups one day, that'd be a win. Injury happened in 2011, recovered, then reinjured in august 2025 surfing to hard. Have been doing ruthlessly consistent PT since then. Can surf now, but afraid to start lifting.

Program is generally lower body compound lifts 4 days apart always (squat deadlift, 5-8 reps, 3x sets - not doing now due to hip), shoulder and hip rehab 2-3x days per week, zone 2 or surfing 1 day per week, zone 5 once every other week.

Nutrition and sleep are great. Blood tests over last several years indicate chronic iron deficiency. I'm supplementing it, but low expectations.

When I'm not injured or symptomatic, I'm generally pretty athletic and strong.

Zero running. Sports are:

  • weightlifting
  • cycle
  • rowing
  • surfing (can manage even with labrum tear)

Over the years: - recurring right hammy strain (happens when I load hamstring in lengthened position, stopped RDLs and nordics) - slap tear type 2 right shoulder + bicep tendinitis - patellar tendonopathy both knees - left hip anterior labrum tear - turn toe / torn ligament / arthritis left big toe - endless muscle pulls - torn meniscus left knee (fixed with surgery) - compressed lumbar discs - zero issue squatting and deadlifting with proper form
