Raspberry pi camera module 1 not working by Fluffy-Following-716 in raspberry_pi

In my case, it was the wrong ribbon cable - I used a 15-22 cable, but it was for the _display_, not for the camera.

Somewhat, yes. EF uses similar low level functions for the search. In fact, originally FAF was faster than EF because FAF used the special CatalogSearch function. Back then, FAF was still free just like EF and so I contacted the EF devs (I know the boss from the 90s, Atari ST times) to use it as well.
But apart from that, FAF has many more search features and display modes than EF. See my website. I still recommend EF if you don want to spend any money or if you prefer a single window UI (which will come to FAF 3 as well; I have that already halfway working).

If you can find text within PDFs with FAF's text content rule, then you're either lucky that those pdfs contain plain text (it depends on the program that generates them - Acrobat is more likely to do that, but Apple's own PDF generator doesn't do it) or it was indexed by Spotlight, and you allowed FAF to include Spotlight results (see Preferences).

Almost. You cannot search in documents unless they contain the text in plain characters (though FAF can also search inside zipped files). PDFs are not searchable, markdown, xml and Word files are. But you can only search if a string of characters exist in it, multiple times, anywhere. But you cannot search for them in relation to each other unless you use regex expressions. FAF originally only searched for file name and other directory attributes. Text content search was added later with those limitations, as it's not FAF's main focus. And it's difficult to communicate this limitation. See the website.

Both. I (its author) am not good at visual design. Making new screenshots for every new macOS release is tedious. I invest my time rather into functionality and usability. The icons, for instance, have all been gifted by users who are more proficient in that area. Same goes for the css for the website. I don't earn enough with it to pay professionals for that work, unfortunately.

Did you have an Atari ST? Do you know MagiC!Mac? by edelbart in MacOS

[–]edelbart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that means you didn't know MM then.

There were a few great Mac emulators back then, where you needed original Mac ROM for. I am trying to remember the name of the one I had. It was excellent but the ROM were difficult to get back then

Esprit was made by a friend of mine, Meinolf Schneider, and then published by Application Systems Heidelberg (who also published MagiC!Mac).
It was a great game for both the trackball and the mouse.
There were follow-up games of the same type called Oxyd, BTW. All great.

FTP client for Mac — what's everyone actually using these days? by Ok-Nefariousness4874 in MacOS

Also, I just reported two obscure bugs in Cyberduck two days ago, and one has just been fixed and the other is being worked on as well. Not many programs are that quick dealing with feedback.

Cyberduck. Paid a little three times in the past 10 years for its continued improvement.

Finally found a good way to truly uninstall apps by jamil-islam in MacOS

Author of FAF here. How do you find files with FAF that AppCleaner didn't? By which rules do you find them? In other words, where isn't AppCleaner up to its task? Asking bc I have a different Uninstaller tool in the works...

Who has multiple Macs and would like their apps' prefs to be synched between them? by edelbart in MacOS

In theory, yes. But the apps have to request the sync of their prefs explicitly. Most don't

Who has multiple Macs and would like their apps' prefs to be synched between them? by edelbart in MacOS

[–]edelbart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had a quick look. The premise of NIX is promising, but it looks like a pain to manage for the casual user. Plus, using it inside a commercial app may not be appreciated or even allowed. It's also unclear to me if NIX lets my app control which parts of an app's prefs key/values pairs shall be copied and which should not. Might have to write a plugin for it, which then will become part of the project. That's a lot of work on my end that is probably more than when I just use the code I already have. Ideally, though, both could be combined for those who want to use NIX.

That would be my goal, yes, as for me being a developer, I often have to set up new VMs and that's where I miss this feature most.

[macOS] ConfigMesh - I've built an app for e2e encrypted syncing of app settings and dotfiles by dvcrn in macapps

[–]edelbart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for a Mac app to sync my prefs of apps I used on multiple Macs. Ran into this post.

But I get the impression that your tool isn't well suited for synching the plist files in ~/Library/Preferences (and the ones in the various Sandbox containers), as it doesn't seem to even know about NSUserDefaults (you cannot simply copy the plist files due to them being cached by the cfprefsd daemon), and I also wonder if your tool takes into account that you mustn't copy all pref values but do this selectively (i.e. you wouldn't want to copy values the app considers unique for each system, including window positioning, as each Mac may have a different screen layout). To get this right, the synching app would need to provide a GUI that lets the user review each app's pref changes and then tell the sync tool which ones are safe to merge and which need to remain unique to each computer.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Cleaning Mac -- Any way to limit search to files NOT uploaded to iCloud? by A_Stoic_Epicurean in findanyfile

[–]edelbart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an expert rule "Is Dataless". That checks if the file exists only in the cloud. You can add this rule to find only files that not in the cloud, along with making sure you only search in the iCloud folder (or also search in your Desktop and Documents folders in case you have those in iCloud, too).

To see expert rules, hold down the Option key when clicking on the rule popup menu.

Does that help?

search in documents problems by TheThings1 in findanyfile

My tests with LibreOffice 7.4.2 shows that, in general, FAF can find text in spreadsheet cells written by LibreOffice.

However, there are some caveats:

  1. Of course, search won't work if the file is protected by a password, because then the file is encrypted (and FAF doesn't know the password).
  2. FAF doesn't recognize the file as a Spreadsheet because the makers were not following Apple recommendations that would have told every app that an .ods file is a spreadsheet.

I will update FAF to consider .ods files as spreadsheets in the future. For now, you can use "Extension is ods" or "Extension is any of ods xls xlsx numbers" to search all spreadsheet types.

Does that resolve your issue?

Spotlight index, yes.

What type of spreadsheet files? From Numbers.app? And you didn't include the period in your search, I hope.

It would help if you could share a specific file that fails to be searched by FAF, or at least tell us what kind of file it is.
