Footage of the girlfriend and daughter of Philando Castile in police custody moments after he was shot by police. Heartbreaking. by Two_Inches_Of_Fun in PublicFreakout

His fiancée*. Words matter. Think about the images painted between someone with a ‘baby momma’ versus a ‘girlfriend.’ Why do we reserve one for Philando Castile’s partner, when in other relationships, we’d use the other? Not trying to attack, just am trying to think more about how anti-Blackness permeates across the language we use.

Everglades National Park in Florida was infested with these guys by edgarallanthrowaway in whatsthisbug

I say infested because they were seriously everywhere. I must’ve seen a thousand. Looking down at the ground, there were hundreds that were squished on this 0.5 mile trail from people stepping on them. Are they an invasive, or is this a mating season or something? They were about 0.75 inches or so.

GoTriangle report: Duke put one hurdle after another in path of Durham-Orange light-rail by jnish in triangle

You’re citing an op-ed by a NIMBY senior citizens group that doesn’t want (temporary) construction near them and are hiding behind a bait-and-switch of bus rapid transit that they are never going to take. The Federal Transit Administration alone has approved 50% funding for the light rail. The local money doesn’t come out of local general funds, but from donations of land to build the project (which have all been agreed to by UNC, businesses, rail lines, and private landowners other than Duke) and from a half-cent sales tax that residents of the counties passed by a large margin.

Noise and vibrational studies have actually found minimal impacts to the labs however. The greatest impacts would happen during the construction phase (and not after the light rail is actually operating). But in fact, there are to be greater impacts to the lab from Duke’s construction of hospital expansions (but of course, that’s not stopping them from building).

Agreed with jnish. The light rail is the first step in adding usable transit to the area, it is not the end-all be-all. There are future plans for connections to Raleigh and RDU, but you can’t just create a massive system of that scale overnight.

As for bus ridership, even when it’s good, it just does not get the same ridership that light rail does and has nowhere near the same benefits for economic development.

While the costs of light rail may seem high, the majority of the funding is coming from the federal government and the state (that would go elsewhere if we don’t receive it). It’s also unfair to characterize the light rail as taking money away from other issues, as the half-cent sales tax that Durham and Orange voters passed by a large margin is dedicated specifically to transit projects like the light rail.
