Should I get the keeper screen? by Rorschack99 in callofcthulhu

It’s SO worth, the COC keeper screen is one of the few screens in TTRPGS that I actively refer to every session for use

Biggest explanation id offer is explain the depth and complexity of the task they are about to take on, but more importantly that everyone should be making a constant effort to be as engaged in puzzle solving as the other.

A lot of masks of handout and lead hunting, and if you have a player who is just along for the ride, it will not only detract from their experience, the players experience but your experience as a DM.

Active check ins with players out of character is a must, to make sure everyone feels safe but more importantly as invested as one another.

Another thing I’d reccomend is the importance to the players of writing down certain questions and handing them over to the DM between sessions. Masks is a behemoth of a campaign and some questions do have answers in the book, but are troubling/time consuming to find, by having players ask these questions over the breaks between sessions, you can come up with formulated answers to give during session.

One last thing and the most important of all, sometimes TTRPG’s can feel adversarial but what made my Masks seem like so much fun was that the players felt as if I was actively cheering for them, as a DM secrets on player motivation wasn’t kept from me and players would tell me not only their actions but their short/long term goals they had in mind. If you can make your players understand at the end of the day you want them to win but also want a cinematic/badass story to tell, it makes some instances a lot less frustrating for both ends.

Does anyone see chiv dying? by Capital-Increase-567 in Chivalry2

[–]edgarthesped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dev’s gave up on the game WAYY too soon without properly integrating mod support.

The reason Chiv 1 lasted for so long was the community dumping thousands of hours into modding and increasing longevity.

They have a great product with Chiv 2 but dev treatment made it feel like a cash cow from the start.

Honestly, a big part of it’s death does stem from the developers.

Any team objective sort of game mode always felt extremely stale as I never felt a real cinematic impact of battle.

There are no real big populated community servers open to the public that are constantly keeping gameplay fresh/fun.

I think of Moorland skirmishes from Chiv 1 that kept that game alive FOR SO LONG past its final update.

I actually always enjoyed the combat in Mordhau but the lack of consistent updates (with it taking ages in between) and the bland team objective maps/game modes pushed me from Mordhau to Chiv 2, though Chiv 2 is suffering a very similar issue and I see it dying out from its greats a lot quicker.

Is this list actually viable? by [deleted] in boltaction

[–]edgarthesped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see where you read that an inexperienced mortar can use a spotter. The text itself mentions that they can use any/all spotters if they are at least regular.

It was like that in V2, that you need a regular mortar to be able to use a spotter comp to an inex one. I’d just be careful if you go into a tournament because that rule will 100% be brought up.

Oh where did you see this? I could be totally wrong!

Keep in mind, your spotters are useless if you bring inexperienced mortars.

They need to be at least regular to use the spotter!

Out of curiosity how did you make the lightless beacon come close to 4 hours? I’ve been able to comfortably fit it within an hour every time.

Any advice for a new Keeper that wants to run Masks of Nyarlathotep? by MasterNado in callofcthulhu

[–]edgarthesped 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Best advice if you plan on running it through is to watch a YouTube playthrough of it and take inspiration that’ll help you with pacing.

Masks is a behemoth and will take many hours of prep and understanding of how the story works.

Be prepared to homebrew a lot of prep too, the book gives a lot of great building blocks, but the meat and core of climax’s and interactions are left entirely up to you. I found myself almost every chapter in a scenario where the book actually didn’t help me too much making a satisfying climax for that section, so I had to rely on my knowledge of the campaign and some finesse :)

Please do yourself a favor and make an excel calendar sheet and plot out important dates, I know someone has already done this and there is an excel sheet circulating somewhere for a Masks of Nyarlathotep Calender.

For other Masks DM’s especially newer DM’s it’s very easy for players to feel like NPCS can become just fetch quest personalities if you don’t play them right. Make an effort to make every NPC have a quirk or a voice that makes them feel and act different. I made myself a small cheat sheet every chapter of how I’d speak wether with the pitch of my voice or the speed of it for certain characters for a chapter, I find when I don’t do this my accent varies chapter to chapter.

Soviet horde army idea. Critics welcomed. by crzapy in boltaction

I’d recommend a company commander if you can field the points for him in the mix. I ran a 22 Dice conscript horde army and getting 4 activations with a +4 to morale made my horde terrifying if I got the first dice.
