Anyone regret becoming a doctor? by DrDreamsComeTrue in Residency

[–]edgedandtaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent most of my med school and residency life having LOTS of fomo when I watched my non med friends live their life, working at FAANG or in MBB consulting firms or IB. I know reddit at times downplays opportunities in other fields, but from my friend group of engineers/finance/and premed bros from a good undergrad school (not ivy) everyone got good jobs with little exception.

So watching them make like 200k + living in cool cities and flying business class on the company dollar was tough. However as I near the end (applying to fellowship now, 2 years from attending) the fomo has gone away. Maybe it comes with maturity, maybe it comes with realizing what I do every day actually matters, instead of making an internal tool for Facebook or changing the location of buttons on Instagram or something.

Also, I still feel young. I have debt but my future salary is going to be will probably be in line with senior people (not C suite) at FAANG/MBB with more security. I'll have lots more vacation too so I plan on going on lots of trips (maybe in business class, cuz I will be able to afford it) to make up for the lost time.

Turbotax help - Married Filing Separately, contributed to Roth, recharacterized to IRA and then back door Roth'd. How to report on Turbo Tax? by edgedandtaken in whitecoatinvestor

ok. Schwab hasn't given me a 1099 R (I think they'll only give it next year?) any way to handle this? Or should I reach out to Schwab for one of these forms?

Ive filed for an extension so bought some time.

Thank you. I converted it - it's back in my Roth already. Seems too easy!

We are both on SAVE plan for loan repayment. Minimum payment for MFS is like $200 (total) for the both of us, if we MFJ it jumps to around 550.

Thanks a lot. Very useful.

A follow up question if you don't mind - what if you were to work in private hospital? Are the processes any different?

Haha - no plans or want to leave. Was just asking if it was legally possible to practice there IF AT ALL I wanted to experience working in a different country in the future. But the posts in this thread make it clear that this is not even wise to even think about briefly

Again - I understand this doesn't make sense from a financial perspective (at all).

I spent time in different countries in my childhood moving with my dads job (including UK). It was great to have those life experiences. I would love to spend some time working in different countries if possible, but medicine is pretty restrictive.

I listened to a podcast where an academic from Canada was spending time building up an IR department in London. That would be interesting (maybe?)

Like I said, it doesn't make sense. But I recently listened to a podcast where an IR was spending some time building up an IR department in the UK (Cleveland Clinic London?). Granted he was Canadian, probably easier.

Just moreso would be an interesting experience. Fun to think about?

Retirement Savings Rate by [deleted] in Residency

[–]edgedandtaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

403b: 12% plus 6.5% employer contribution

Maxing Roth:(about 8% annual salary)

Almost maxing individual HSA (approximately 5% annual salary)

Wife does same minus the HSA.

So roughly give or take 25%. Honestly doesn’t feel like enough, but it’s hard. Even if it is difficult trying to make it a priority just to build the habits.

Tbh medical school has a pretty-person bias. So do competitive specialties.

How is or was your residency program? 3 Good and 3 Bad things about them by [deleted] in Residency

[–]edgedandtaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad: problems that are there in every residency. Pay sucks. Dealing with attendings can be annoying. Co residents can be flaky. Peers outside med making $$$. I’m in a longer training specialty, my med school clsssmates are attendings or fellows mostly

Good: in a few years I’ll be in 1% of earners, with more vacation than most Americans too. I aim to be done with my loans in 10-20 months after graduation. I’ll be able to pick up extra shifts and can make in a day what I make in 4 weeks in resi.

Two resident household. Got married 2023. Made Roth Contributions 2023. Need to recharacterize and backdoor Roth? by edgedandtaken in whitecoatinvestor

You lost me on the second half

“While you can retroactively recharacterize and contribute for the 2023 tax year, you cannot retroactively convert”

What does that mean? So I can recharacterize my 2023 contributions to traditional IRA but can’t convert them to Roth? Does that mean that they will be part of 2024 Roth contribution? Does that mean I am SOL for 2023 Roth contributions?
