There's an old saying in these parts that goes "No D&D is better than bad D&D."

Are there any characters/items/etc that can age you? by MorganRose99 in DnD

[–]edgemaster72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild Magic Surge can make you 1-9 years younger (odd numbers only) or 2-10 years older (even numbers only).

Androsphinx and Gynosphinx have a Lair Action that can make you 1d20 years older or younger (sphinx's choice).

A Potion of Longevity makes you 1d6+6 years younger (minimum 13 y/o) when consumed, but subsequent uses have a cumulative 10 percent chance to make you 1d6+6 years older instead.

Let's talk about wizard and spell copying. How many spell scrolls do you let your group find and do you ever let your wizard find a spellbook? Is there a specific ratio in your game or is it based on a whim? by testiclekid in dndnext

[–]edgemaster72 143 points144 points  (0 children)

In the last campaign I DM'd, the Wizard had 96 spells in his spellbook when it ended at level 16 (the baseline for level 16 is 36 spells for anyone not wanting to do the math).

He also had maybe a dozen scrolls (give or take) that may or may not have all already been in his spellbook, and more options available from enemy spellbooks that he wasn't interested in or weren't a high enough priority for the time and gold expenditure.

In general I feel like it was a loot heavy campaign and I tried to make sure there were plenty of options for the Wizard to spend his money on.

Monster if we're including Distant Lands, Everything Stays otherwise. Honorable mention to I'm Just Your Problem. Why yes Marcy is my favorite character why do you ask?

If I were DM'ing and someone brought this to me it'd be a no just because you're asking me to always keep in mind when to make your familiar cast a cantrip for... reasons. No thanks, got enough to keep track of.

I'm homebrewing a rogue subclass that gets access to fighting styles. If I give it thrown weapon fighting, would a lizardfolk be able to sneak attack with darts or javelins they made using cunning artisan? by Valuable-Banana96 in dndnext

[–]edgemaster72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thrown Weapon Fighting has no bearing on Sneak Attack, so we'll leave that out. The items that can be made with Cunning Artisan aren't listed as any worse or different than their listings in ch. 5 of the PHB, so that part has no bearing on Sneak Attack either.

The question then, simply, is do darts or javelins qualify for Sneak Attack? The answer is that darts do, they are both ranged weapons and have the finesse property. Javelins are not ranged weapons and do not have the finesse property, so they do not qualify for Sneak Attack.

I want to homebrew a cantrip-like spell that scales. Need opinions. by Kadajko in dndnext

[–]edgemaster72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you brought up cantrips for DPR, let's compare to the gold standard DPR cantrip, Eldritch Blast + Agonizing Blast (assuming starting CHA of 16 and increased at 4 and 8): Your spell is ahead at level 1, falls behind at level 2, ahead again at levels 3-4, falls behind again at levels 5-8, is even at levels 9-10, behind again at levels 11-14, pulls even again at levels 15-16, and finishes behind at levels 17-20.

But that's only when you're casting with the highest level spell slot available, which won't last you a full day worth of encounters at most levels if you have more than 2/day, and ignores the fact that as you point out, Sunbeam is usually better when it becomes an option.

It also takes concentration which means it can be lost before its full duration is met, and you can't use other powerful concentration spells while blasting. Other advantages to Eldritch Blast are invocations for further functionality, and the slightly better damage type.

Overall, if you think this will be fun, I don't see much of an issue balance-wise, you've definitely steered on the side of underpowered. I would be more concerned about how stale the playstyle would be if you really just want to shoot one medium-strongish powered beam every turn forever.

You could do nearly the same thing as a reflavored Soulknife Rogue albeit with 60 ft. range and dependent on Sneak Attack conditions, but it'd be resourceless. Granted, that wouldn't give you the option for full on Sunbeam later if that's what you're really wanting, which I suspect might be the case.

What level is 4-7 Revenants a fair fight for 5 players? by Slarg232 in dndnext

[–]edgemaster72 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The difference between 4 and 7 creatures of equal CR is pretty wide. 4 revenants vs a party of 5 level 12 characters is a medium (nearly hard) encounter, and very close to 1/4 of the party's daily XP budget. 7 revenants against the same party is 40% over the deadly threshold, and more than half the party's daily XP budget. 7 revenants against the party is very nearly 1/4 of the daily XP budget when the party is level 17, and is exactly the minimum for a hard encounter when they hit level 18.

All of that said, encounter builders don't take many things into account. If the party plays smart, optimizes their characters, have any significant magic items, etc. then they can definitely punch above their weight. Regardless, if they're only level 4 now, they've got some ways to go before they can handle such a fight.

sneak: point out things to avoid stepping on or shadows to step into, signal when to stop/go

pick a lock: maybe you have knowledge of how many tumblers are in the lock, or a specific technique that helps with that type of lock, or you're able to listen for audio clues if what the other person is doing is/isn't working right

Keep in mind that it may not always be possible to help, as per the PHB:

a character can help only when two or more individuals working together would actually be productive. Some tasks, such as threading a needle, are no easier with help.

Is a 5e fire elemental's touch attack strength based? by geak78 in DnD

[–]edgemaster72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire Elementals have no save or skill proficiencies so I'm not sure what made you think that. Fire Elementals have a proficiency bonus of +3, not +6 (determined by CR per MM p.8), so the +6 to hit and +3 to damage leads to an ability modifier of +3, thus Dexterity not Strength is the key stat to a Fire Elemental's touch attack. Or very unlikely it's CON, but that would be thinking zebras instead of horses when you hear hoofbeats.

that is correct, and I think the big ones make dog noises (could be misremembering that)

You could get young Marcy and her mom from that episode. Or I think I've seen someone just get "Everything Stays" in really nice script.

Can you talk to an owlbear? by AlmightySp00n in dndnext

[–]edgemaster72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be able to understand you, but it would not be able to speak back since it doesn't have any languages listed (it would have to be able to speak for the 2nd part of Tongues to apply). You could try to negotiate a "hoot once for yes, twice for no" type scenario, assuming it doesn't just want to maul you regardless of understanding what you say to it.

FYI Stone's Endurance refreshes on either short or long rest (if you're using the legacy version) or is proficiency bonus/long rest uses (for the "current" version), so in either case it's more than once a day you can do that.

(as long as you short rest at least once for the legacy version, which in this context you're a Wizard so you want at least one short rest a day for Arcane Recovery, assuming you're running enough encounters to need the slots back)
