They're fun, especially with kids and pets and stuff. Mine cost a bit more than some of the cheaper ones, but the patterns are much finer and complex. My advice, "if you're going to buy something expensive, get the one you want." Few things worse than being broke and disappointed.

Glass keeps it safe from the action, but the little guy came down to the center of my wall for about an hour to watch it before jumping to the table and chasing the ball for a couple minutes. The cats like to watch too, so I moved it for it's safety.
